The Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada
The Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada is the country’s leading charity dedicated to improving the lives of children, youth, and families involved with the child welfare system.
This Pride Month, we celebrate the strength, resilience, creativity, and leadership of 2SLGBTQI+ young people across Canada.
Every young person deserves to feel safe, valued, and free to be their authentic self. Yet we know that 2SLGBTQI+ youth continue to face disproportionate rates of trauma, family rejection, and involvement with child welfare systems.
At Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada, we are committed to helping young people connected to the child welfare system access the support, opportunities, and sense of belonging they need to thrive. Creating inclusive communities where all young people are seen, heard, and celebrated is essential to that work.
This month and every month, we honor and affirm the diverse identities of 2SLGBTQI+ young people and recognize their courage, contributions, and the importance of ensuring they have safe spaces to grow, connect, and succeed.
Looking for support, information, or ways to be a better ally? Visit Kids Help Phone’s 2SLGBTQI+ Youth & Allies Resource Hub! Happy Pride Month!
Three years ago, we released our first cookbook, A Safe Plate. The response from supporters like you was incredible. Today, we are so proud to introduce the next volume: More Than Meals: Stories and Recipes of Youth From Child Welfare.
This collection is about much more than what’s on the plate. It is a window into the lives of four incredible young people, Michelle, Natasha, Jae and Chantal, who have used food as a lifeline to navigate the child welfare system. By downloading this book, you are choosing to be there for youth by witnessing their stories:
– Michelle makes Jamaican Fried Chicken and Caribbean-Inspired Banana Bread, as a tribute to the language of care she learned from her grandmother.
– Natasha shares her “Broc-Fu,” a dish born from the independence she found while navigating food insecurity at 16.
– Jae serves up a Warm Chili that provided a sense of control and grounding during a childhood spent in foster care.
– Chantal offers her Easy-Peasy Chocolate Banana Muffins, a ritual of self-care shared with her “found family.”
We know you care deeply about these stories. We are asking you to be there for kids in care today by downloading the cookbook (it’s free!), reading these powerful accounts, and sharing the link with your friends and family.
Your voice helps us grow this community. The more people who read these stories, the more people we have standing in their corner!
You can always support kids in foster care by making a donation of any amount – just click on the logo below!

Dawn of the Dead
This classic movie re-boot is as undead as the zombies in it!
10 horror movies that peaked with their opening scenes:
Sometimes, it doesn’t get better — or scarier — after the first 23 minutes (by Brianna Zigler)
Let’s face it: Sometimes an opening scene is just too good.
We see Nurse Ana (Sarah Polley) return home from working the night shift, during which a patient admitted for a simple bar fight received head scans and was sent to the ICU.
Ana mostly shrugs it off and heads home to her husband, Luis (Louis Ferreira). The couple go to bed, only to wake up to the sight of a neighborhood girl with a bloody mouth in their bedroom. The zombie girl bites Luis, and it becomes an all-out battle for Ana to escape her suddenly bloodthirsty husband.

SCREEN CAPS
We have another blast from the past this month! Enjoy almost a thousand screen caps of episode 206 Partners of the 1992 series Urban Angel. Please note that the episode numbering in the series is inconsistent; we are going with the system of the re-release from a few years ago.
The episode revolves around a sensitive investigation where Victor has to navigate fraught alliances, professional relationships, and the gritty realities of the city’s underbelly. It also features a lot of early cell phones – the “Brick” was on the cutting edge of technology back in the day.
You can purchase a DVD copy of the entire series here.

THE 4th READING SERIES: MR. MUGS – ROCKETS AWAY!
The fourth monthly reading series continues in Mr. Mugs – Rockets Away! – Part 2 by Martha Kambeitz and Denise Burns.
Unlike previous readers, this volume was published as a hardcover book within the Level 3 series of the Mr. Mugs readers. It was originally released in 1968. The Mr. Mugs books have been out of print for many years but occasionally you can find them on eBay, Amazon Marketplace or various other antique book dealers.
Louis credits the Mr. Mugs books series with helping him to learn English at a very young age.
You can listen to all the previous book readings under the Reading Series Tab, and you can read and listen to the first part of this book here.
Here is this month’s chapter.

Chapter 71: Balloons And All That, Part 1 (continued)

… to be continued next month!
Smiley had red and green balloons,
and soft pink and blue ones. Some were
as yellow as the sun.
Some were snow white.
One day the wind
played a trick on Smiley.
It made him go up.
Up went the balloons.
Up went Smiley.
“HELP!” he shouted.
“GET ME BACK DOWN!”
In no time he was
away up in the air.
His long legs
did look funny!
Someone got him
just in time.
Everyone laughed
at Smiley
and his balloons.

FRIENDS NEWS
Aryn Mott
Aryn is an Intimacy Coordinator and Mental Health Professional in the Vancouver area. Intimacy coordinators are intimacy professionals who work on film, television, and performance capture projects.
Aryn posts almost daily on her Instagram feed, providing simple and practical methods for regulating the nervous system in stressful situations, both on and off set.
The best emotional regulation tool I’ve ever learned doesn’t sound like emotional regulation.
It sounds like a film set.
It sounds like a Tuesday.
It sounds like life.
It’s called SHIT.
When things get overwhelming:
S — Stop
H — Have a breath
I — Identify what’s happening
T — Take the next step
That’s it.
Not: Fix everything. Figure out your future. Control everyone else.
Just:
Stop. Have a breath. Identify what’s happening. Take the next step.
Most people don’t need a better plan.
They need a pause between what happens and what they do next.
Ten seconds can change the next ten hours.
When everything feels like SHIT, use S-H-I-T.

“It’s how the space feels once the heavy beige tones are removed. The updated palette creates a brighter, cleaner, and more contemporary look while allowing the natural light to do more of the work. A simple color update, applied consistently throughout the home, can completely change the overall impression of a space.”

Jennifer Spence
It’s YVR Screen Scene Podcast Day! Genre-hopping actress Jennifer Spence returns to the pod to discuss the third season of Canada’s spiciest workplace comedy, The Trades. Set in a blue-collar community where the high stress of working in a refinery is balanced by the comedic antics of its plant workers, The Trades centers around general foreman Todd Stool, and his sister and roommate, Audrey, who follows in her big brother’s footsteps pursuing a career in the trades. Jennifer shines as Chelsea, an ambitious young executive from the head office who arrived in the first season and worked damn hard to become an essential part of the family.
The third season premiered in early spring and in the season finale, Chelsea and Conch Industries as a whole are (no spoilers!) poised for real change.
The Trades airs on Crave Canada and is currently in the running for a whopping eight trophies at this week’s Canadian Screen Awards. On the eve of the CSAs, Jennifer (who was recently nominated for a Leo Award for her work as Chelsea) joins Sabrina Furminger to reflect on her adventures in television comedy, how her adventures in Chelsea’s shoes have impacted her adventures through this exceptionally fucked up world, and her adventures singing “Born to Be Wild” in a very special third season episode.

Meditteranean Pasta With Sun-dried Tomatoes
INGREDIENTS:
8-10 oz gluten-free spaghetti
2 Tbsp olive oil, divided
1/2 cup red onion, diced
4 garlic cloves, minced
1/4 cup dry white wine, (such as Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc)
2 cups mushrooms, sliced
2 roma tomatoes, seeds removed and finely chopped
1/2 cup sun-dried tomatoes, chopped
1 1/2 cup artichoke hearts, chopped
1/2 cup peas
1 1/2 Tbsp Italian seasoning
3 cups fresh spinach
Salt and black pepper, to taste
1 Tbsp fresh lemon juice
1/3 cup fresh basil, chopped or torn, for garnish
2-3 Tbsp nutritional yeast, optional
DIRECTIONS:
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the pasta and cook according to package instructions. Reserve 1/2 cup pasta water, then drain and set aside.
- Heat 1 Tbsp olive oil in a large sauté pan over medium heat. Add the red onion and a pinch of sea salt, cook for about 3 minutes, until softened and translucent.
- Add the garlic and cook for 30 seconds, until fragrant.
- Pour in the white wine and let simmer for 1-2 minutes, allowing the liquid to reduce slightly.
- Add the mushrooms and cook for 4-5 minutes, until softened and lightly browned.
- Stir in the chopped tomatoes and cook for 4-5 minutes.
- Add the sun-dried tomatoes, artichoke hearts, peas, and Italian seasoning. Cook for 6-8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the fresh tomatoes break down and become soft, and the mixture reduces and lightly coats the pan.
- Add the spinach and stir until wilted.
- Add the cooked pasta and toss to combine. Gradually add reserved pasta water, 2-4 Tbsp at a time, tossing continuously, until the pasta is lightly coated and glossy.
- Season with salt and black pepper to taste. Then add the lemon juice and remaining 1 Tbsp olive oil, tossing to combine. Serve topped with fresh basil and nutritional yeast, if using.
Enjoy!
