Haven Toronto and St. Michael’s Homes

Haven Toronto is Canada’s only daytime center where elder homeless, marginally housed and socially isolated men can feel safe, where they can form and cultivate friendships, and become part of a community. Their partner organization St. Michael’s Homes provides a continuous-care model of programs and services, resident and out-patient counselling and psychotherapy, and a drop-in serving clients experiencing mental health issues living in the community.

From the recent newsletter:
Our integration with St. Michael’s Homes has already strengthened our administrative and operational capacity, allowing us to pilot two new winter programs in response to rising community needs.

In partnership with the City of Toronto’s Winter Services Plan, Haven extended its daily hours from 4:00–7:00 PM (Nov. 15–April 15), providing members with additional access to a warm meal, essential supports, and a safe place to be during the coldest months.

We also launched a two-month overnight shelter pilot in collaboration with local hospital partners, including St. Michael’s Hospital. Individuals experiencing homelessness who presented in emergency departments could be referred to Haven for overnight care, with our second floor adapted each evening to provide cots, enhanced staffing, and on-site nursing support.

The demand was immediate. In the first few weeks, 51 patients were referred from hospital settings. In total, 400 individuals were supported through the pilot—each provided with warmth, safety, and dignity.

These initiatives were delivered alongside Haven’s full continuum of daily programs and services at a time when demand for our supports continues to rise.

Social inclusion is a pillar of health and wellness, especially in our aging community.

Right now, loneliness is at an all-time high. It’s impacting everyone, but we’re seeing just how deeply it’s contributing to the mental health crisis among men in particular.

At Haven Toronto, we’re creating spaces where connection can happen again. Through programs like art therapy, 8-ball pool tournaments, card games, summer BBQs, and more, our members find community, purpose, and a sense of belonging.

But we can’t do it alone. We need your support to continue building and improving these programs, as they directly impact the lives of the men who walk through our doors every day.

This spring, help someone start again.

Of course you can also give to the general operating fund of the organization by clicking on the logo below. Please note that you will be linked to our very own donations page which still bears the former name of the shelter – The Good Neighbours Club. Your donation will still arrive at Haven Toronto and St. Michael’s Homes.

The Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada

The Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada is the country’s leading charity dedicated to improving the lives of children, youth, and families involved with the child welfare system.

Every milestone matters. Every step forward deserves to be celebrated.

It’s Children and Youth in Care Day in Ontario and we’re proud to join the Ontario Association of Children’s Aid Societies and partners across the province in continuing the Forget Me Not campaign by celebrating the Little Wins of children and youth in and from care.

A little win can look like passing a test, learning to cook a meal, making a new friend, or simply getting through a hard day. These moments may seem small to some, but for many young people, they represent growth, courage, and hope.

At Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada, we believe every young person deserves to feel seen, supported, and celebrated, not just for where they end up, but for every step it takes to get there.

Join us in recognizing the strength of children and youth in and from care across Ontario. Let’s remind young people that their Little Wins are worth celebrating.

You can help by making a donation – just click on the logo below, the process is quick, secure and simple.

Chapter 70: Balloons and All That, Part 1

… to be continued next month!

Smiley was a funny clown
who liked to sell balloons.
He thought ballons were always good
for a birthday or a surprise.
Every day Smiley and his monkey went
up and down the streets. Smiley called:

“BALLOONS! BALLOONS!
Red and green,
Pink and blue,
Come and get
The one for you!”
“BALL-OO-NS”

The boys and girls liked to see
Smiley and Monkey go by.

When Smiley did something funny,
Monkey did too. How everyone laughed!

Our body doesn’t know the scene ended just because someone yelled ‘cut.’

One of the most overlooked things in film:
actors and crew can carry emotional activation long after an intense scene wraps.

Your nervous system responds to what it experiences, even when it’s fictional.

Quick reset after hard scenes:

  • shake out your hands
  • unclench your jaw
  • exhale slower than you inhale
  • look around the room and reconnect to the present

Because emotional safety on set matters too.

Mika McKinnon

Mike writes:
“My latest project, Life Unearthed, airs on PBS starting April 1. I worked as a researcher on the praries episodes 4-6. It’s really fun, and I swear Ariel is carving out a niche for herself as a microscopic wildlife documentary film maker.”
