Haven Toronto and St. Michael’s Homes

What an incredible Day of Giving at Haven Toronto, Canada’s only daytime shelter for elder homeless men!

We collected a ton of warm winter clothing dropped off throughout the day — thank you so much to our community for showing up.
We had visits from amazing donors, volunteers, members of the Toronto Police Service, and media coverage from Global News, CTV News and others.

What a wonderful way to kick off the season of giving!
We are still accepting donations — both clothing and monetary (click for more info about in-kind donations). Your generosity truly makes all the difference for men at Haven Toronto. Thank you!

Thank you to everyone who took the time to donate essential warm winter clothing for the men at Haven Toronto during our Day of Giving on December 2nd. We truly cannot do this without you!

This year, we collected over 200 items in just a few short hours. Many have already been distributed to Haven’s clients – highlighting the ongoing and urgent need for warm winter clothing.

We are still accepting clothing donations year-round. You can also support specific campaigns through our website.
Tax receipts are available for donations made until December 31st – please donate generously!

Thank you for continuing to support our community.

Of course you can also give to the general operating fund of the organization by clicking on the logo below. Please note that you will be linked to our very own donations page which still bears the former name of the shelter – The Good Neighbours Club. Your donation will still arrive at Haven Toronto and St. Michael’s Homes.

The Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada

At Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada (CAFC), we believe that when caregivers feel supported, children have the stability they need to thrive.
Safe at Home brings together Indigenous and non-Indigenous partners, child welfare agencies, and experts in child development and intimate partner violence to disrupt the cycles of harm caused by intimate partner violence.
Consisting of two evidence-based and trauma-informed programs, Mothers in Mind and Caring Dads, and Indigenous adaptations of these, Safe at Home:

  • Supports mothers and children as they heal from the impacts of violence
  • Strengthens child-centered parenting after experiences of IPV; and
  • Engages fathers in recognizing, understanding, and changing harmful behaviors.

When families have access to compassionate, culturally informed support, healing becomes possible.
When asked, parents have shared what it means to have safe spaces where they are understood, supported, and encouraged.

“Before this program, I never thought about how my words and actions affected my kids. I thought providing food and shelter was enough.

Through Caring Dads, I learned that being a good father also means listening, apologizing, and creating a safe space for my children.

Last week, my daughter hugged me and said she feels happy when I’m around. That was the first time I heard that in years.”
– Caring Dads Participant

“I really enjoyed meeting other moms, many of which in similar situations.
Everyone is very kind and relatable. Staff very sweet and supportive. Each brings different qualities to the group. Their kindness and understanding is so nice and refreshing.
Never felt judged, just understood!
I recommend this group to many mamas.”

CAFC 16 Days of Activism Against Partner Violence

16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is a global call to action to end violence in all its forms, including intimate partner violence (IPV), which affects far too many families every day.

No child should have to grow up in a home marked by fear, instability, or harm. Yet many children across Canada, are living with or witnessing IPV, carrying burdens no child should ever have to bear.

For children, the impact is profound.

During this time, we honor the children and caregivers affected by violence — and continue our work with child welfare agencies and community organizations to support trauma-informed and culturally grounded programs that help families experiencing IPV find stability, connection, and hope.

Shop WonderKits and give symbolic gifts that represent real impact. Each one helps youth from care create a moment they knew their future could change.

Until December 31, 2025 every WonderKit will be MATCHED by our generous donor, the Dottori-Attanasio Family Foundation, up to $100,000!

Breaking Bad

A new analysis by Mayank Shandilya compares Walter White vs. Daniel Plainview: King of Oil vs. King of Meth — two of the greatest written arcs in the history of movies and TV shows, Breaking Bad (2008-2013) and There Will Be Blood (2007). Both win some and lose some.

Here’s an excerpt:

In Season 5 Episode 7, Walter confronts a drug lord named Declan (Louis Ferreira) in the desert and delivers, “Say my name,” to which Declan replies, “Heisenberg,” and White responds with, “You’re goddamn right.”
For me, this is what drives him. This line defines Walter White’s arc. His whole charade was to earn acknowledgment, not just money.

See screen caps of the episode here.

THE 4th READING SERIES: MR. MUGS – ROCKETS AWAY!

The fourth monthly reading series continues in Mr. Mugs – Rockets Away! – Part 2  by Martha Kambeitz and Denise Burns.
Unlike previous readers, this volume was published as a hardcover book within the Level 3 series of the Mr. Mugs readers. It was originally released in 1968. The Mr. Mugs books have been out of print for many years but occasionally you can find them on eBayAmazon Marketplace  or various other antique book dealers.

Louis credits the Mr. Mugs books series with helping him to learn English at a very young age.

You can listen to all the previous book readings under the Reading Series Tab, and you can read and listen to the first half of this book here

Here is this month’s chapter.

Listen to the sound clip here:

Chapter 65: Just The Thing! (continued)

“Just look at me dance with my fur!”
called Giraffe.

“One, two, three.
Dance with me.
Round I go.
Heel and toe!”

The Man in the Moon looked in.

“It’s time to go!
It’s time to go!”
he whispered.
“Get going!
Get going!”

And off they went. One by one he saw
the animals tumble back into the zoo book –

… to be continued next month!

In went bear,
then Giraffe,
then Tiger,
then Elephant,
then Monkey.

And that was that!

Aryn Mott

Aryn is an Intimacy Coordinator and Mental Health Professional in the Vancouver area. Intimacy coordinators are intimacy professionals who work on film, television, and performance capture projects.

Aryn was a featured guest on Kat Reynolds’ Booked & Busy Podcast (episode 13). Kat says:

“I absolutely LOVED having this chat with the incredible Aryn Mott! In this episode Aryn reflects on their experiences working on the Emmy-winning series Shogun, highlighting the need for emotional safety on film sets. We discuss their journey as an intimacy coordinator and actor and Aryn shares insights on the tools and techniques used in intimacy coordination, the balance between acting and coordinating, and their experience becoming a published author. Throughout this chat, Aryn also reflects on the lessons learned from auditions and the significance of collaboration and curiosity in storytelling.”

Aryn has new headshots! They write:

“These are the first photos where I actually see… me.
For years, my headshots: stunning, incredible photographers never quite matched the person I was. The last few years have been a mix of internal shifts and external changes, gender-affirming care, unlearning old expectations, and finally acknowledging myself in full.
And showing up authentically in my work? It’s a different kind of fulfilling. Easier on my nervous system, louder in my clarity, and so much more grounded in who I actually am. It’s where I can soar.
These photos feel like that alignment finally caught on camera. A small, powerful moment of recognition.
Here’s to showing up honestly and feeling the difference.”

Aryn writes:
“Honored to be heading to the 25th Annual Whistler Film Festival! So excited to join some of my favorite and most inspiring humans on stage this year for a powerful convo at WFF25 – Caring Creatively: How Inclusion Shapes the Stories We Tell.
This panel means a lot to me. Inclusion, identity, and telling stories through lived experience isn’t “extra” in filmmaking – it’s the heartbeat. And I’m grateful to sit in community with people who are actually doing the work.
Also… surreal moment: a few of the shows I’ve worked on are premiering at the festival. Honored doesn’t even cover it.
Here’s to 25 years of bold storytelling, and to making more room for voices that have always deserved to be centered.”

Aryn’s first film script Still Blooming was a finalist at the Crazy 8s Film Festival!
“This story is about trans elders, told through the lens of a good old rom-com. It’s my first script, and my first time being in the top 12 at Crazy 8s, something I’m still letting sink in.
To have my work sit alongside 11 other stories, in a space that truly celebrated the work already accomplished, was deeply affirming. Seeing all the other teams, the collective buzz and the genuine desire for everyone to succeed, made it feel generous rather than competitive.
Having my mom there at the top of the day made it even more meaningful. Getting to do this with Sasha as a producer, and then to work with Zachary Hug, digging into the story and the craft, is a masterclass and an experience I’ll carry with me.
At its heart, this experience reinforced why this story matters: trans elders finding their voice, being heard, and being seen, sometimes through joy, humor, and love.”

Patrick Gilmore

Patrick won the UBCP/ ACTRA 2025 award for Best Supporting Performance in a Series!

“Deeply grateful to my UBCP/ ACTRA peers and all union voices who have supported and encouraged me. To Megan, Nate, Oliver, and the School Spirits universe for their words and trust. And to my home team, Vault Entertainment and Lucas Talent, we can retire now. Thank you!”
Congratulations, Patrick!!

Bradley Stryker

Bradley won the award for Best Supporting Performance in a Motion Picture at the UBCP/ ACTRA awards for his work in 13th Round!
He writes:

“Thank you UBCP/ ACTRA and my peers for the acknowledgment! #grateful #motivated and ready to get back to work!”

Congratulations, Bradley!!

from the Vancouver Sun:

“To be honored by my peers in this way is beyond humbling,” said Stryker. “Playing Anton, a boxing trainer with Parkinson’s disease, felt like a pretty big risk if I’m being honest. It was the first time a role had intimidated me in a very long time. For it to play out in this way fills me with gratitude that we as a filmmaking team were able to create something that resonates with people.

And for me, that is the highest accomplishment unto itself.”

Read the full quote here.

Bradley is also making his Broadway debut!

He plays Rutherford Selig in Joe Turner’s Come and Gone by August Wilson.

Bradley writes:
“Alas in 2026 dreams do come true! I am beyond grateful to make my Broadway debut with this stellar cast, led by the incomparable Debbie Allen.”
Way to go, Bradley!!

In between all the accolades Bradley found some time to go hiking with his family…

He writes:

“Weekend family hike for the win!”
