CHARITIES NEWS

Ability Online

What is Ability Online?
For over 30 years, we have provided a holistic and innovative model of support for helping vulnerable youth and young adults with disabilities or health challenges to reduce social isolation and increase inclusion. Our supportive and safe online community fosters positive attitudes, builds self-esteem, and inspires involvement which contributes to emotional health and wellness.

About the Program
If you’re looking for a comfortable place to hang out, make friends, and feel good about yourself then Ability Online is the place for you. On Ability Online, everyone looks the same – we’re just friends meeting friends.
Our online communities are comprised primarily of people who share the challenges associated with disabilities and/or chronic illness, but everyone is welcome to participate!

The whole point of Ability Online is to have a fully integrated online community, proving the point that there are no disabilities online. So welcome aboard everyone!
In our online community you can exchange public or private messages on a whole range of topics ranging from medical mysteries to animal stories. We also offer lively chat facilities, skill development modules, games, and activities. And we’re especially proud of our mentors, who provide patient and caring peer support.
You will also have access to our amazing forums, where you can read messages posted by other members, and respond if you wish, or create your own! Forums are organized by topics to make it easier for you to find the types of messages you are interested in. Forums are at the core of the Ability Online environment and provide an open invitation to start a conversation with a friend who shares your interests.

Haven Toronto and St. Michael’s Homes

Haven Toronto is Canada’s only daytime shelter for elder homeless men. From nutritious meals to medical services, internet access to book club meetings, Haven Toronto provides far more than just a safe place to hang out. In addition, their partnership with St. Michael’s Homes provides assistance in securing affordable housing.

This summer, our Programs & Services Team at Haven Toronto hosted a City Benefits and Subsidies Information Session.

The session was designed to help clients better navigate government systems and access the supports they need. From applications to eligibility, we’re here to bridge the gap and provide guidance every step of the way.

At Haven Toronto, system navigation is just one of the many ways we support our community.

Haven Calling!

Haven Toronto is still collecting gently used mobile phones! These days our phones are far more than a means to communicate – they can be a true life line.

Please consider giving to the general operating fund of the organization by clicking on the logo below. Please note that you will be linked to our very own donations page which still bears the former name of the shelter – The Good Neighbours Club. Your donation will still arrive at Haven Toronto and St. Michael’s Homes.

Turn possibility into reality for youth from child welfare this back to school season
Support youth from child welfare as they head back to school with the resources they need to thrive — like scholarships, tutoring, and school supplies. With your donation, you’re helping turn dreams into degrees and possibilities into realities. Following your donation, you’ll receive Pages of Possibility, a yearbook you’ve made possible with your generous donation, so you can see your impact.

Youth from care participate in post-secondary education at roughly half the rate of their peers who have not experienced the system, and in Ontario, less than half of youth from the child welfare system graduate from high school¹. For those who do pursue post-secondary education, the financial barriers to higher education are significant, and for many youth from care, they’re the deciding factor between potential and possibility.
That’s why, every year, Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada proudly invests in the futures of young people through scholarships, tutoring, bursaries, and programs that support their educational journeys.
Thanks to the unwavering generosity of our donor community, last year alone the Foundation delivered millions of dollars in educational funding to youth across the country, helping them pursue their goals, build confidence, and change their lives through learning.
And now, for the first time ever, we’re proud to share the stories behind those numbers, directly from the students themselves. Introducing the 2025 edition of Pages of Possibility: a yearbook celebrating the strength and achievements of youth from care.

Pages of Possibility: Our 2025 Yearbook
In Pages of Possibility, you’ll meet six inspiring young students — Lucifer, Kim, Tatyana, Jenn, Sebastian, and Jessie — who have each overcome barriers on their path to education. Their stories are powerful reminders of what’s possible when young people from care are given the support they deserve. You’ll also discover more about Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada’s Post-Secondary Education (PSE) program, which has been helping youth build brighter futures through access to education since 1995.

Of course you can always donate to the general fund as well, ensuring that your money goes where it’s needed most! Click on the logo below to get started.

SHOWS NEWS

Battery Park

From Tribeca Citizen – What Movies Were Shot in Tribeca?

This is a crowdsourcing feature, where a journalist requests input from readers – a form of citizen research where everyone can participate.

“While not a movie, adding this 2000 TV series since it’s such a funny premise: Battery Park starred Elizabeth Perkins and Justin Louis as officers in a police department in Battery Park — and I have no idea if that meant the park itself or Battery Park City.
The show was cancelled after four episodes, but Henry Winkler did receive an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy for his appearance in the episode Walter’s Rib.”

SGU – Stargate Universe

From 7 Sci-Fi TV Shows That Were Cancelled Too Soon By Liz Wyatt
The series took a team to a strange new universe, introducing new stakes and adventures. Stargate Universe bundled a group of soldiers, scientists, and civilians together and had them board a spaceship called the Destiny. Destiny’s goal was to travel billions of light-years from Earth, with the help of Ancient technology (the Stargates). Unfortunately, something goes wrong, and they end up stranded far from home with no easy access to help.

From 10 TV Shows That Ended on a Cruel Cliffhanger We’ll Never See Resolved by Sweta Rath
These TV shows left fans hanging with brutal cliffhangers that will never be resolved due to unexpected cancellations

The final Stargate series ended with the crew entering stasis pods with no guarantee they’d ever wake up. Faced with an impossible blockade of drone ships at every stargate, the Destiny crew made a desperate gamble in the finale directed by Andy Mikita. Would they survive years or decades in stasis? Would the ship find a way around the drones?
Stargate Universe can currently be streamed on Amazon Prime Video.

SCREEN CAPS

This month we go back to Season 1 of House of David and episode 104 – The Song of Moses, with 152 screen caps.
Now that David has been anointed as the next King of Israel by Samuel, his life is in grave danger. Despite that, this episode throws him right into the deep end as he is summoned by none other than the current king, Saul, and he must leave his father Jesse (Louis Ferreira) and his home. Tensions rise as war is on the horizon, and David is certainly in for quite the shock.

The fourth monthly reading series continues in Mr. Mugs – Rockets Away!Part 2 by Martha Kambeitz and Denise Burns.
Unlike previous readers, this volume was published as a hardcover book within the Level 3 series of the Mr. Mugs readers. It was originally released in 1968. Louis credits the Mr. Mugs books series with helping him to learn English at a very young age.
You can listen to all the previous book readings under the Reading Series Tab, and you can read and listen to the first half of this book here.

Here is this month’s chapter.

“I think I should change something,
too,” said Monkey. “… I know –
your ears, Elephant! May I have
your ears? The monkeys always chatter
so much I can’t hear a thing. Your ears
should be just the thing for me.”

“Here,” said Elephant. “I’m tired
of big ears. I’m happy to change.”

“Thank you,” said Monkey. “With ears
like this I won’t miss a thing!”

Aryn posts daily regulation tools – short video clips with tips and advice on how to deal with stressful situations both on and off set that are perfectly suited for everyday life situations as well!

Today’s Regulatory Tool: Sour Candy

One of my favorite quick regulation tools, and one I’ve been using recently while supporting performers, crew and myself … is sour candy.

Why it regulates your nervous system?
That sharp, sour taste gives your brain an immediate jolt, pulling focus away from spiraling thoughts or overwhelm. It stimulates your salivary glands, engages the vagus nerve, and interrupts stress patterns, helping bring you back into your body and the present moment.

Why it’s supportive?
As human beings, regulation isn’t about ignoring the cues of our bodies, it’s about noticing them and giving ourselves what we need in the moment. Whether you’re a performer navigating emotional bleed-off after a charged scene, someone witnessing an intense moment, or simply a human moving through stress, sour candy can help regulate and ground you.

On set, tensions can rise quickly, and having a discreet, fast tool makes a difference. This is why I always keep some in my bag, it’s supportive for performers and for anyone navigating high-intensity spaces.
And, full transparency, this video went a little off-topic because the wonders of nature distracted me. I thought about redoing it, but the moment felt too perfect, regulation can also be about letting beauty in.

Greyston Holt

Greyston has been visiting Abruzzo, Italy with his family. He shared this photo of his wife and daughter exploring an old town.

Rob Munic

When I was 9 years old my dad took me to a movie that changed my entire life. I watched a group of kids my age on screen and I said to my old man, “Padre, I want to be in there.”
Ten years later I was in LA and ten days later I was on a set getting my SAG card.
Being a performer saved my life. Being a story teller has filled my mind with countless dreams and journeys. Along the way I’ve loved every second of this ride. Through the highs and lows it’s all been Wins.
