Haven Toronto and St. Michael’s Homes

Helping Our Unhoused Neighbors During the Summer

Summer heat can be dangerous for those without access to shade, water, or shelter. Here are three simple ways to offer real support:
– Carry clean, filled water bottles (preferably reusable) to hand out when you’re out and about
– Know where the nearest cooling stations are located and share that information (see our previous posts)
– Acknowledge people with kindness — a smile or brief conversation can make someone feel seen
These small actions can help protect lives. Let’s lead with compassion and care.

Haven Toronto is Canada’s only dedicated daytime shelter for elder homeless men. In collaboration with St. Michael’s Homes they provide invaluable services to Toronto’s marginally housed residents. They advocate tirelessly for equal housing rights and support chronically underserved populations.

You can always give to the general operating fund of the organization by clicking on the logo below. Please note that you will be linked to our very own donations page which still bears the former name of the shelter – The Good Neighbours Club. Your donation will still arrive at Haven Toronto and St. Michael’s Homes.

The Sun Life Bright Futures Kids Wellness Program
Now in its second year, the Sun Life Bright Futures Kids Wellness program is helping children and youth involved in the child welfare system across Canada build lifelong tools to support their mental well-being. Delivered in partnership with Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada and generously funded by Sun Life, the program brings evidence-based, mindfulness-focused mental health support to children and youth aged 8–14 who have experienced trauma and instability.

Through Bright Futures, children learn practical strategies to manage anxiety, regulate emotions, and improve their overall mental wellness. The program directly supports the Foundation’s Impact Framework and new wellness-focused funding priority, which prioritizes early intervention to help young people from care build healthy, resilient futures.

The fourth monthly reading series continues in Mr. Mugs – Rockets Away! – Part 2  by Martha Kambeitz and Denise Burns.

Louis credits the Mr. Mugs books series with helping him to learn English at a very young age.

Chapter 61: Just The Thing! (continued)

… to be continued next month!

Elephant wanted some color.
“I’m tired of looking like this.
I want to change color,” he cried.

“Let’s see,” said an animal.
“How about yellow and black? Yellow
and black should do something for you.”

And it did! It was just the thing.

“Thank you. I’ve always liked color,”
said Elephant. “You’re a real friend.”

Aryn Mott

Aryn is an Intimacy Coordinator and Mental Health Professional in the Vancouver area. Intimacy coordinators are intimacy professionals who work on film, television, and performance capture projects.

Aryn posts daily coping strategies (or Regulatory Tools) on their Instagram feed to help you deal with stressful situations – on set and in everyday life.

Regulatory Tool of the Day: The Pocket Tool
Today’s offer is beautifully simple: carry something in your pocket that you can hold, rub, or feel to bring yourself back to the moment.
A pocket tool can be anything with texture or weight you can reach for when you’re feeling untethered. It’s a way to cue your nervous system that you’re here, you’re safe, and you’re allowed to slow down.

What does it do?

  • Anchors you in the present through touch
  • Offers a predictable sensory experience in unpredictable moments
  • Supports self-regulation by engaging your senses gently

It doesn’t have to be something you buy.
This can be a stone from your favorite walk, a button from an old coat, a coin, a carved piece of wood, or even a key you already carry. The goal is intention, not expense.
The one I’m using right now is something I was gifted, a little treasure picked up on Sasha’s adventures because it made them think of me. It has a couple of grounding features for me:
It’s something I can run my thumb across when I need to pause.
It’s a reminder that I’m thought of and cared for.
Your pocket tool doesn’t have to be perfect, planned, or fancy. It’s about noticing what feels grounding when the opportunity presents itself and giving yourself permission to keep it close.

What’s something you could carry today?

Rob Munic and Ingrid Rogers

Rob posted the following anniversary message on his Instagram feed:

“20 years! If a grain of sand is a lifetime – I would scoop up two handfuls and it still wouldn’t be enough time to be in love with you. From the day I met you I was thunderstruck. Frozen in place and at a loss for words. Loving you and having you as my wife is a dream I thought could never come true. Now two decades later, I couldn’t dream of not having you in my life. You have made every single day in my world better. Twenty years in and my heart still flutters when you walk in the room. Twenty years later when you hold my hand, it’s electric and it’s go time (read into that as you will and yes it means what you think) Twenty years later and my love knows no bounds. Twenty years later and I still marvel at your
beauty. Twenty years later and you make laugh harder, love stronger, stand taller (no, I don’t wear lifts) and feel a deeper love than I have ever felt. Twenty years later and I pinch myself for being so lucky that you chose me to take this dance with. Ingrid – you are the best gift I have ever received. Ride or die until the wheels fall off. I love you so very much – let’s keep dancing Baby.”

Congratulations on the first 20 years, and best wishes for the next!

Peter Kelamis

Peter was at the Victoria Fan Fest earlier this month! From their program:

A talented comedian and impressionist, Peter Kelamis has been a go-to guy to lend his voice and acting skills across different Hollywood platforms. His first big voice acting role was playing the goofy and mysterious Rolf on the super popular children’s show Ed, Edd, and Eddy.
He’d soon be called upon to lend his voice to one of the biggest anime characters ever in Goku on the Ocean Dubs run of Dragon Ball Z. More recently, he’s voiced Yoda in the Lego Star Wars movies.

Bradley Stryker

Bradley has a new movie out called Untamed, which became available on Netflix on July 17. He writes:

“I couldn’t be more grateful to be part of this show and team!”
