Haven Toronto

Haven Toronto is a drop-in center where elder homeless, marginally housed and socially isolated men can feel safe, where they can form and cultivate friendships, and become part of a community.

New and gently used, clean clothing items are always welcome year-round. If you want to know exactly where your donation is going, consider purchasing a Kit for a Cause! Anything you buy here goes to an elder homeless man in need.

We were also visited by Haven Toronto’s Patron, The Honorable Edith Dumont, as well as Division 51, and our friends Mark and Nadia at Addicted Magazine.

Take a look at the many programs and events offered this month!

Of course you can also give to the general operating fund of the organization by clicking on the logo below. Please note that you will be linked to our very own donations page which still bears the former name of the shelter – The Good Neighbours Club. Your donation will still arrive at Haven Toronto. You may also want to donate to their partner organization, St. Michael’s Homes.

The Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada

Did you know? According to Statistics Canada, rates for police-reported family violence and intimate partner violence (IPV) increased in 2023, going up to a rate of 350 victims of family violence and 354 victims of IPV per 100,000. From 2018 to 2023, rates of family violence and IPV rose by 17% and 13%, respectively. In 2023, women and girls accounted for two-thirds (68%) of victims of family violence and nearly four in five victims of IPV (78%).
Research shows that domestic violence has profound and long-lasting impacts on children – particularly children under four – and makes it more likely that they will be placed in care. Through programs like Safe at Home, Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada is working to curb and prevent IPV to strengthen families and enable children to grow up in safe, healthy homes.

House of David

David Goes to War with Goliath in First Look at Prime Video’s New Series ‘House of David’

Created by filmmakers Jon Erwin and Jon Gunn, the hugely ambitious and grand series will debut on February 27, 2025, with three episodes dropping on premiere day, followed by one episode weekly. House of David tells the story you thought you knew of one of history’s most iconic underdogs in the form of David, the shepherd boy destined to become Israel’s greatest king.

The series follows David’s meteoric rise from anonymity, beginning with his anointment by the prophet Samuel and climaxing in his legendary battle with the enormous and powerful Goliath while, at the same time, following the demise of King Saul whose pride and paranoia contribute to his own downfall as David ascends. The official synopsis of the series can be found below:

“House of David tells the story of the ascent of the biblical figure, David, who eventually becomes the most renowned and celebrated king of Israel. The series follows the once-mighty King Saul as he falls victim to his own pride. At the direction of God, the prophet Samuel anoints an unlikely, outcast teenager as the new king. As Saul loses his power over his kingdom, David finds himself on a journey to discover and fulfill his destiny, navigating love, loss, and violence in the court of the very man he’s destined to replace. As one leader falls, another must rise.”

Leading the ensemble is Michael Iskander, who stars as David. The young actor, fresh from his award-winning turn in the Broadway hit Kimberly Akimbo, was chosen after an extensive four-month international search. Joining him is an impressive assortment of stars, including Ali Suliman as the embattled King Saul, Ayelet Zurer as Queen Ahinoam, Saul’s loyal but conflicted wife, Stephen Lang as Samuel, the prophet who anoints David, and Martyn Ford as Goliath, the Philistine giant who challenges David. The series also features the likes of Louis Ferreira as David’s father Jesse, Alexander Uloom, Ethan Kai, Indy Lewis, Yali Topol Margalith, Sam Otto, Oded Fehr, Davood Ghadami and Ashraf Barhom.

Louis is about to head back to Greece to shoot a few more episodes. Mark February 27, 2025 on your calendars so you don’t miss the premiere!

SCREEN CAPS

‘Tis the season for a good miracle story! We have 367 caps from the 1998 movie The Staircase this month. Loosely based on a true story, it is set in the Old West and constitutes one of a handful of period pieces Louis has done.

Logline:
The sisters of the legendary Loretto Chapel in Santa Fe are nearing completion of a chapel, but the architect, contractor and laborers have all omitted stairs to the choir loft. This becomes a source of disagreement and contention between all parties until one day a mysterious drifter, Joad, arrives in town and is hired by the Reverend Mother Madalyn to design and build the staircase.

Louis plays the architect of the chapel, Mr. Mouly. While the movie is a lovable tearjerker perfect for the holiday season, Louis is in the pivotal scene of the entire story, when Mr. Mouly with his wounded ego confronts the mysterious stranger, with unexpected results. No spoilers here – you just have to watch it for yourself! The DVD is available on Amazon.com, or you can watch it on YouTube!

THE 4th READING SERIES: MR. MUGS – ROCKETS AWAY!

The fourth monthly reading series continues in Mr. Mugs – Rockets Away! – Part 2  by Martha Kambeitz and Denise Burns.
Unlike previous readers, this volume was published as a hardcover book within the Level 3 series of the Mr. Mugs readers. It was originally released in 1968. The Mr. Mugs books have been out of print for many years but occasionally you can find them on eBayAmazon Marketplace or various other antique book dealers.

Louis credits the Mr. Mugs books series with helping him to learn English at a very young age.

You can listen to all the previous book readings under the Reading Series Tab, and you can read and listen to the first half of this book herehttps://www.louisferreira.org/the-4th-reading-series/

Here is this month’s chapter.

Chapter 53: The Guess Who Zoo, part 2 (continued)

The Guess Who Zoo had an elephant,
a tiger, and bears. Some boys and girls
made funny-looking animal faces.

“How do you like my tiger?”
asked Cathy. “He’s tired of yellow.
He wants to change color. So here he is.
His name is Green Tiger.”

The class liked Green Tiger too.
