CHARITIES NEWS

Ability Online

Ability Online is a safe, bully-free online platform for children, youth and young adults with disabilities. It’s a wonderful way for young people to connect who would otherwise not have many opportunities to socialize and make friends.

Hey everyone! MyAbility.ca would like to inform you of our Monday Night Chat!

This is where several members come together to talk about their week and to play in chat games!
It is a great opportunity to interact with other members real time and is definitely a great way to start your week!

We hope to see you guys there next Monday at 7pm!

MyAbility.ca would like to share the goal of our website and how we aim to thrive for the following years!

Help Ability Online achieve those goals! You can always make a donation by clicking on the logo below – every penny helps, and your contributions are tax-deductible where applicable.

Haven Toronto

Haven Toronto is Canada’s only daytime shelter for elder homeless men. Haven Toronto reduces barriers to health care, housing and food security and provides access to a full-time nurse, counselors, healthy meals and more.

Fresh food is a non-negotiable at Haven Toronto.

Our members are guaranteed two warm meals a day, as well as an afternoon snack.

This is all thanks to generous donations from community members like you!

Please consider donating today.

Housing Support at Haven Toronto

WHEN: Tuesday & Thursday, 10:00 am – 12:00 pm
Our team provides help with COHB and RGI applications, and has been instrumental in finding long-term solutions for the members at Haven Toronto who use these services.

You can also purchase Kits for Cause and provide daily essentials for elder homeless men directly.

Of course you can also give to the general operating fund of the organization by clicking on the logo below. Please note that you will be linked to our very own donations page which still bears the former name of the shelter – The Good Neighbours Club. Your donation will still arrive at Haven Toronto. You may also want to donate to their partner organization, St. Michael’s Homes.

The Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada

Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada is the country’s leading charity dedicated to improving the lives of children and youth and families involved in the child welfare system.

Help us equip 200 youth with backpacks and reach our $10,000 goal!
Children from the child welfare system have a less than 50% chance of completing high school, and only 27% will attend post-secondary education. Make a $50 donation to cover the cost of a student backpack for a young person from child welfare who is entering post-secondary education. Your donation will provide youth with the tools they need to succeed.
Donate at cafdn.org/backpack

The new Focus on Education report, which includes poll results from our latest Ipsos survey, highlights the importance of equitable access to post-secondary education for youth from care and the role it plays in breaking the cycle of poverty, building long-term stability, and contributing to Canada’s future prosperity.

Let’s continue to support and invest in the futures of these incredible young people. Together, we can create lasting change.

You can always contribute to the general operating fund so the money goes where it’s needed most. Click on the logo below – it’s easy and secure.

SHOOTER

A new article by Collier Jennings about the movie Shooter has just been posted on Collider.

“Mark Wahlberg’s High-Stakes Action Thriller Is Smarter Than Critics Gave It Credit For :
Shooter‘s mix of pointed political commentary and blood-soaked action led to a prime spot on the Paramount+ charts, and it’s well deserved as this is a film that deconstructs most of the tropes you’d see in a political thriller.”

THE 4th READING SERIES: MR. MUGS – ROCKETS AWAY!

cover image https://louisferreira.org/the-4th-reading-series-part-2/

The fourth monthly reading series continues in Mr. Mugs – Rockets Away! – Part 2  by Martha Kambeitz and Denise Burns.
Unlike previous readers, this volume was published as a hardcover book within the Level 3 series of the Mr. Mugs readers. It was originally released in 1968. The Mr. Mugs books have been out of print for many years but occasionally you can find them on eBayAmazon Marketplace or various other antique book dealers.

Louis credits the Mr. Mugs books series with helping him to learn English at a very young age.

You can listen to all the previous book readings under the Reading Series Tab, and you can read and listen to the first half of this book herehttps://www.louisferreira.org/the-4th-reading-series/

Here is this month’s chapter.

Chapter 50: The Guess Who Zoo (continued)

… to be continued next month!

“Won’t this be fun!” cried Mary.
I guess Mrs. Day will be surprised.”

“How will we ask Mrs. Day’s class
to come?” Mrs. Cook asked.

“Let’s write a letter,” answered Pat.

“That’s a good idea. What will we put
into the letter? Let’s think about
what Mrs. Day’s class will want to know.”

“I think they’ll want to know
what the surprise is about,” said Cathy.

“And when we’ll have it,” said Mary.

“They’ll have to know what time
it will be, too,” said Claire.

Q&A

Taran had a question:
“I am relatively certain that [Louis] channeled Bruno Gerussi’s portrayal of Nick Adonidas in Shogun.
If I happen to be even remotely correct, I’d love confirmation if you could forward the query.
Even if I’m wrong, it made me smile thinking of it.
Being Canadian and roughly my age, my guess is that watching The Beachcombers played a role in his formative years, too.”

Here is Louis’ answer:

“So if I’m answering – for what it’s worth – thank you for the question! I did not use Bruno, although, yes, I did grow up with The Beachcombers, and I think a remake is due and I would love to play that part.
But I have to be honest – it was much more about me using members of my personal family, and leaning into my cultural, quote/ unquote, cultural appropriation.
Playing a Portuguese guy – it was actually my last name, was why I took it, because this is what’s happening in our business right now.”

Feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or just need a reset?
Try this simple yet powerful breathing technique to calm your nervous system and bring yourself back to center.

Here’s how to do it:

Take a deep, long inhale through your nose for 5 seconds.
Hold your breath.
Take a quick 1-second inhale, then hold for 3 more seconds.
Slowly exhale through your mouth for 6 seconds.
Repeat this cycle 3 times.

Why it works:
This breathing pattern activates your parasympathetic nervous system, signaling your body to relax and reset. It helps lower stress levels, slow your heart rate, and bring you into a state of calm.
Next time you’re feeling the pressure rise, pause and give this breath a try. It’s a small but mighty tool to shift your energy and regain focus.

Rob Munic

Rob shared a sequence of images and some thoughts:

“I’ll admit it – I only see myself from the front. I’m front facing. Face forward – but as I get older I want be able to see myself from all sides. Not to look back, but to understand where I’ve been and the places I don’t want to revisit. The last pic I have my head down. The bag was heavy and I had a long way to carry it. I need to hold my head high regardless of the weight and the distance.”

Peter Kelamis

Peter is a veteran actor, voice actor, and stand-up comedian. He has been the voice of iconic characters, such as “Goku” in Dragonball Z, “Rolf” in Ed, Edd ‘n Eddy and “Yoda” in Lego Star Wars. His dynamic range extends to roles in Beyond, GLOW, The Man in the High Castle, and Stargate Universe, along with guest appearances in numerous TV shows and films, making him a fan-favorite across genres.

What’s it like to voice some of the most iconic characters in animation history?
Peter did a guest interview on August 28th over at Voiceover School!

“Zilla had to be rushed to Animal Emergency last night… a very sudden and unexpected allergic reaction. After a very large bill and an overnight stay, she is back in our arms looking a lot better. Love You Little Z!”

Bradley Stryker

Our always super-busy friend Bradley writes:

“Lots of juggling of family and work and soaking it all up in the process. So many updates…
For now — let’s say these things:

  1. Sheltering Season” (movie I wrote and directed) is on TUBI!
  2. Another movie I was in “The Order” – is in competition at the Venice Film Festival and then it is playing at TIFF in September
  3. An episode of “911 Lonestar” that I did will be airing on September 23rd.

And I think that is it for now.”
