CHARITIES NEWS

Ability Online

At Ability Online, we recently celebrated Canadian Thanksgiving (October 14), and we are grateful to our donors, volunteers and members for helping us welcome young people with disabilities and health challenges to connect with others, create positive friendships, and develop life skills in our safe, supportive online communities. Thanks to you – it’s free to join and has been for 34 years!
With your support we have helped thousands of young people build self-esteem, confidence and skills to realize their potential.
But did you know it takes 100 “turkeys” a month to run our three fully accessible online communities? Please consider showing your gratitude this weekend for all that we do for our members, by donating a virtual “turkey”. We will be forever grateful! Click here or the link below to make your donation.

Help Upangshu!

Upangshu is a sweet 6 year old who just wants to be able to express himself and his needs to the people around him.
Having Autism and developmental delay makes it more challenging for Upangshu to communicate, which in turn has an impact on his learning. Heading into grade one, this is something that needs to be addressed right away.
An iPad and communication software will be instrumental in facilitating Upangshu’s education and daily interactions. Which in turn, will significantly impact his quality of life.
Help us raise the $2000 required to get Upangshu an iPad with safety case and LAMP Words for Life Communication software. Your donation will give Upangshu a voice!

You can always donate to the general operating fund for the organization and know that the money will go where it’s needed most! Click on the logo below to help.

Haven Toronto

Haven Toronto is a day center supporting elder homeless men since 1933. Open 8am – 4pm, 365 days a year. We are the sole Canadian organization dedicated exclusively to men 50+, serving a roster of approximately 1,000 clients at any given time, with 30% over the age of 60, 80% homeless, and 100% facing food insecurity. Nearly 50% of our operational funding relies on donations from generous individuals, foundations and corporations.
For the first time in over seven years, Haven Toronto launched a major awareness and fundraising campaign on October 15th, 2024. Stay tuned. Please consider donating today to make a real difference and share widely. Thank you.

At Haven Toronto clients have a wide variety of useful programs and facilities to choose from. Check out this month’s schedule below!

One of the easiest way to help the men is to purchase a Care Kit online – the kit will go directly to an elder homeless man in need, no middleman required, and there is something for every budget! Click here to select one – it’s so easy to donate!

This past month, we bade farewell to our Executive Director, Bruno Scorsone as he went back to retirement. We are so thankful for all of his hard work at Haven! He shared some words with us here:

“The COVID epidemic brought about much disruption in the lives of individuals, families and organizations. Although the staff and volunteers of Haven Toronto did their best to keep providing needed supports for older men, by the time the epidemic eased off, much needed to be changed. I was asked to come back from retirement, stabilize the organization and assist in identifying a suitable organization with which to merge in order to provide continued and even better services to older men.

This I did and, after much work and consultation, I am glad to pass responsibility for Haven Toronto to Natasha Wakaruk, the Director of Finance and Operations at our site at Haven, and to Robin Griller, the Executive Director of St. Michael’s Homes, who will be the overall Executive Director of the two merged organizations.

As I begin my new pilgrimage into the unknown, I will carry in my heart all of you, the wonderful people of Haven Toronto. You have been a blessing for me, and to you I say thank you. May you continue on your own pilgrimage with confidence: you are not alone.”

Read the entire letter in this month’s newsletter.

Of course you can also give to the general operating fund of the organization by clicking on the logo below. Please note that you will be linked to our very own donations page which still bears the former name of the shelter – The Good Neighbours Club. Your donation will still arrive at Haven Toronto. You may also want to donate to their partner organization, St. Michael’s Homes.

The Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada

Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada is the country’s leading charity dedicated to improving the lives of children and youth in the child welfare system.

On National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we reflect on the stories of Indigenous communities across Canada. Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada is dedicated to supporting and improving outcomes for Indigenous youth in care and amplifying their voices.
Meet Raymond (RJ), one of the incredible lived experts in our community. Through A Safe Plate, a cookbook created by the Foundation, Raymond shared a recipe that comforted them during difficult times and reminded them of their roots and home.
Today, we recognize and celebrate Raymond and the many Indigenous youth who continue to endure the legacy of residential schools, the ’60s Scoop, and the current child welfare system. Let’s continue to listen, learn, and support a future where Indigenous voices are heard and uplifted. Here’s a list of Truth and Reconciliation resources that you may find useful:

Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action (or have it read to you!)

Telling Our Twisted Histories

We’re proud to partner with Indigenous-led organizations to support the health and well-being of children, families, and youth. But we know reconciliation is a journey, and there is much more to do. If you’re interested in our progress, check out these graphics.

October is a time of warmth, comfort and the start of a busy period of celebration and being together with loved ones. For many youth in and from child welfare, this time of year can be difficult as they may be unable to connect with friends and family, or they lack the resources to visit them. You can support youth in and from care during this time through our symbolic giving WonderKit Shop, with gifts starting as low as $15.

Please consider making a donation to help foster kids in need – gifts to the general fund are always welcome. Just click on the logo below; the process is easy and secure.

SHŌGUN

Shōgun’s 15 Biggest Changes From The Book
by Sarah Novack

Read the full article on Screen Rant here.

FX’s Shōgun is an adaptation of James Clavell’s book, and it has changed many of the novel’s aspects. The show is one of the most popular and successful series of 2024; Shōgun won the most awards at the 2024 Primetime Emmy Awards and had the most nominations. Shōgun won some of the most prestigious categories, including Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actor & Actress in a Drama Series, and Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series. FX had initially adapted Shōgun as a limited series, but it became so successful that now Shōgun seasons 2 and 3 are officially in development.

Although there is no canon book material for Shōgun season 2, the writers are determined to continue Lord Yoshii Toranaga’s story. However, the first season is based on James Clavell’s book, and the writers’ room had to make many critical decisions when crafting a narrative for television. While the TV show is largely a faithful adaptation, the writers still changed key elements from the book. Some of these changes improved the story, but others were disappointing. Regardless, the adaptation of Shōgun greatly contrasts its book counterpart despite mostly following the overall narrative.

SHOOTER

Louis plays FBI Director Howard Purnell,

It’s been a big year for Mark Wahlberg, who already has two hits under his belt in 2024. However, more than 15 years ago, Wahlberg played Bob Lee Swagger in Shooter, which has gone on to become one of his most famous roles and movies in his 30-year+ career. Shooter, which also stars Michael Peña and Kate Mara, has made its way back to the Paramount+ top 10, after spending a considerable amount of time there earlier in the summer. It currently sits at a “rotten” 48% score from critics and an 80% rating from general audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. Shooter is based on the novel Point of Impact by Stephen Hunter, and Jonathan Lemkin penned the screenplay for the film. (excerpt from an article on Collider.com)

Logline:
The killer: Marion Reader, an aging woman whose twenty-eight year old son, Owen Reader, came back to live with her to take care of her. As a side hobby, she does kitschy folk art paintings of her cat, Mathias, inserted onto existing painted canvases. To earn more money, she attempts to sell her folk art at a local café.
The victim: Julia Conrad, a woman working at a high end art gallery. Julia is found dead, shot point blank when she was out for her morning run.
When the detectives learn the gun that was used to kill Julia is pre-WWI vintage it leads them to the Readers. The extent to which Owen and Marion will go to protect the other may bring the motive to light.

Aryn Mott

Aryn is an Intimacy Coordinator and Mental Health Professional in the Vancouver area. Intimacy coordinators are intimacy professionals who work on film, television, and performance capture projects.

Aryn posts daily video self-help tips, and while they are rooted in the performing arts they actually apply to anyone who experiences high-stress or emotionally intense situations. If this describes your life – try one of Aryn’s practices. They are short, simple, and best of all – they really work!

“In my role as an Intimacy Coordinator and Mental Health Coordinator, I love sharing closure practices, end-of-day rituals, and rolling/de-rolling methods that allow performers to process their experiences but its not about forcing anything on anyone. These practices aren’t about limiting performance—they’re about supporting it.

My goal is to provide options that honor each performer’s process, ensuring they feel grounded, safe, and able to fully step into (and out of) their roles.

I believe in community, knowledge-sharing, and creating environments where mental health and well-being are prioritized, without compromising the integrity of the story we’re telling.

Options exist. It’s about finding what works best for you.”
