The Corsage Project: Helping Graduates Make Lasting Memories

For students graduating from high school, few events are looked forward to as much as the high school prom. A pivotal experience in a young person’s life, considered by many to be a rite of passage that marks the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. It is a time to celebrate accomplishments, friendships, and memories that will last a lifetime.

The prom experience can also be costly – according to Global News, the price of a prom dress alone could run up to $1,200 in Toronto. In addition to formal attire, there are also additional costs for cosmetics, shoes, and accessories. It’s an expensive experience that can be out of reach for many teenagers. Enter the Corsage Project—a non-profit program working in partnership with Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada, that provides female-identifying secondary students in the Greater Toronto Area with all the glitz and glamour of the prom celebration.

Of course you can always give to the general operating fund by clicking on the logo below – every penny helps, plus it’s easy and secure.

SHOWS NEWS

Don’t Let Them Out

From Deadline.com: ‘Don’t Let Them Out’: Emily Rios, Louis Ferreira And Bonnie Root Topline Horror Feature

Emily Rios (Snowfall, Breaking Bad), Louis Ferreira (S.W.A.T., Breaking Bad), and Bonnie Root (Cruel Hearts, The Movie, Cold Case) will star in the new independent horror-thriller feature film Don’t Let Them Out.

Don’t Let Them Out centers on a struggling woman who journeys to a property she has inherited in hopes of selling it to pay off her debts.

But upon arriving to the property, the story takes a terrifying turn when the woman is lured into a desperate scavenger hunt down a perilous rabbit hole. The female-helmed film blends psychological twists with haunting horror elements in the vein of Hereditary and The Conjuring, adding in sinister themes of generational trauma woven into the storyline.

Louis plays a character named Jimmy. Read more about the writer Lila McLaughlin here. Stand by for more info in upcoming newsletters!

Spivey meets up with his old boss Hicks for drinks in this episode to reminisce about old times before the conversation turns to one of their fellow colleagues who is missing from the bar.

The Moore County News has an interview with Jay Harrington who plays Sergeant David ‘Deacon’ Kay in S.W.A.T., and he mentions Louis while discussing his directorial debut. Read the interview here!

SHŌGUN 109 Crimson Sky

Louis makes his third appearance in the epic miniseries Shōgun (stand by for screen caps in Ferreira Fest 174/ June 2024).

Logline:
At the docks, Captain General Ferreira (Louis Ferreira) tells Father Dell’Aqua that the heretic (John Blackmore) has returned. Read a very detailed episode recap here.

Discussions and negotiations have begun for a possible follow-up storyline!

What Shōgun Season 2 could look like after bombshell update

With the news that Shōgun star Hiroyuki Sanada has signed a deal to reprise his role as the cunning strategist Lord Yoshii Toranaga, plans could be in motion for a second and third season, according to Deadline. With that said, let’s take a step back and check on who’s still in the show, the characters who are left standing.

The Europeans

We can’t forget the presence of the Europeans. Father Visitor Dell’Acqua (Paulino Nunes) is still in Japan and still has a mission to fulfill. Father Martin Alvito (Tommy Bastow) and Blackthorne also have an uneasy truce after he arranged the Englishman’s release at Mariko’s behest. It remains to be seen if he ends up being a player in Toranaga’s court. Vasco Rodrigues (Nestor Carbonell) is also still in Japan. While he may not have love for the church, neither does he have one for the Japanese.

Ferreira, Dell’Acqua, Alvito and Rodrigues

Ferreira (Louis Ferreira), the captain of the Black Ship, is stranded in the country without a permit from the Regents. For now, these are the characters still in play.
Shōgun is streaming on FX, Hulu and Disney+.

Stargate Universe

GameRant has recommendations for The Best Viewing Order For The Movies & Shows in the Stargate Franchise. Here’s an excerpt:

Instead of another movie based on Stargate SG-1 or Atlantis, the writers created Stargate Universe. It featured a new cast with an edgier tone. The new story arc focuses on a team lost in space traveling on the Ancient ship Destiny. It features an excellent cast with actors like Robert Carlye, Louis Ferreira, Lou Diamond Phillps, Ming Na Wen, and more. Stargate Universe was a compelling sci-fi series with good character development.

Chapter 46: Georgie Giraffe (continued)

… to be continued next month!

“That was a close call!” said a tired-looking bear.

The elephants and the bears thanked Mr. Giraffe.

“Don’t thank me,” said Mr. G.
“Thank Georgie. He saw it first.”

“It’s a good thing you have a long neck,” chattered the monkeys.

“Yes, you can see things I can’t see,” said the tiger.

“And with your long legs,” shouted the bear, “you can run so fast!
You got to my house in time to get me out.”

“I like being a giraffe now,” Georgie answered.
“It’s a good thing to have a long neck and long legs.
I like being a giraffe and I always want to be one.”

SO BERRY NUTRITIOUS

Our friend Jackie has an Instagram feed for sharing her culinary creations. Every month she contributes a recipe you can all try out, knowing that the result will be both nutritious and delicious!

BBQ Jackfruit Burgers

“Jackfruit is the largest fruit in the world and loaded with antioxidants. When cooked, it’s a tasty vegan meat substitute. Its stringy texture even looks like pulled pork! Enjoy!”

Ingredients:

1 can young Jackfruit in brine, drained, rinsed and shredded (cut the hard ends off)
1 Tbsp grapeseed oil
2 garlic cloves, minced
1/2 tsp garlic powder, smoked paprika, parsley, onion and herb seasoning blend
Salt and pepper to taste
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup BBQ sauce of choice or more to taste
The fixings – gluten free burger bun, arugula, sliced tomatoes, sliced pickles, caramelized onions, sautéed mushrooms and Dijon mustard.

Method:

Prepare all of your burger fixings and set aside.

Heat a sauté pan on medium and add the oil.

Add the minced garlic and stir for a few minutes until fragrant.

Add the shredded Jackfruit and stir.

Add all of your spices and stir for a few minutes.

Next, add the barbecue sauce and a bit of water, cover and let simmer for 10 minutes, adding more water if it looks dry or is sticking to the pan. The Jackfruit will become more tender as it cooks.

Toast burger buns and then assemble your Jackfruit burger and enjoy!
