CHARITIES NEWS

Ability Online

Every young person deserves to feel seen, supported, and strong. At MyAbility.ca, we’re building a safe, inclusive space where youth with disabilities can grow, connect, and shine.

You are my (ray of ) Sunshine

Self-confidence and self-esteem are powerful tools for mental health when they are strong. But, for many reasons, young people with disabilities often have a harder time building strength in these areas:

  • They are teased or bullied because of their differences.
  • They often make social mistakes and are misunderstood, leading to exclusion and isolation.
  • Their true abilities/potential are not recognized or nurtured.
  • They are not given the means or time to communicate their thoughts and feelings.
  • Their stress and anxiety are real, but often overlooked because of their disability.

Will you donate a ray of sunshine to our members to help them shine? Click on the tiles to learn how!

Just as flowers need sunshine to thrive and grow, our members also need a safe and supportive place to learn and grow. They need to feel valued, and that they belong. But we need your help to make the sun shine brightly so that we can continue to offer our program for free to hundreds of vulnerable youth across the country.

Together we can magnify the impact of our program and create transformational change for young people of all abilities and backgrounds. Together we can make the sun shine!

Thank you, and as we like to say, Shine On!

The Youth Works Program is sponsored by RBC Future Launch and funded in part by the Government of Canada under the Youth Employment and Skills Strategy Program.

Youth Works is a pre-employment development program that aims to help youth in and from care in their transition to independence.

When youth “age out” of the child welfare system, it can be a stressful and disorienting time. They lose access to all supports, including a social worker and other resources.

Program Components

  1. Employability Skills
Employment counselors will work with youth participants individually or in groups to prepare them for their employment path (preparing resumes, completing job applications, employment-readiness skills, career development, networking opportunities, etc.)
  2. Internships and Job Placements
Youth who are job-ready will receive support with job searching and be referred to employers for meaningful work experience
  3. Employment Training Supports
Youth who need credentials or training for entry-level jobs such as first aid and CPR, food handler’s certification, or a driver’s license to accept a job will be supported in accessing them.

Battery Park

From an article on Movieweb:

It’s Time To Revive Frank Grillo’s Forgotten Police Sitcom

“We might all have had to say farewell to CBS’s long-running NYPD procedural Blue Bloods, so maybe it’s time to reintroduce a little-known police sitcom called Battery Park. Spun out of an undeveloped TV pilot from 1999, which would have starred Charlie Sheen and Joe Pantoliano (among others), this short-lived series debuted a year later and had a feel all its own. Originally airing on NBC in early 2000, Battery Park was about the goings-on inside a police department in, well, you can probably guess, the West side of the Southern tip of Manhattan, New York.
Actress Elizabeth Perkins played Captain Madeleine Dunleavy, the leader of the bunch. She was blunt and brash with her team, but quirky all her own. She wants to become mayor (which never happens). The more notable cast members on the force were Louis Ferreira, Bokeem Woodbine, and Jacqueline Obradors, who play Lieutenant Ben Nolan, Detective Derek Finley, and Detective Elena Vera, respectively.
The first two episodes revolve around Ben falling for a mobster’s daughter, going out with her, and hiding the relationship from the press. Then there’s a high school computer-stealing takedown in the third and an attempt to arrest Jon Bon Jovi in the fourth. A parody of Batman is also thrown in for good measure, whom Detective Finley and Stigliano fawn over. As you can see, this cop show is more comedy than cuffing. But that’s alright; the laughs usually stick the landing. The situations of Frank Grillo and Bokeem Woodbine are usually the most memorable. It’s not unusual for a weekly show like Battery Park to continue storylines or relationships from the previous week, but they were unique in the sense of also touching on previous gags.” (Read the full article here.)

As a bonus the article also includes a link where you can download some episodes! Enjoy!

Urban Angel

Louis first major series Urban Angel was available on YouTube a few years ago, sponsored by Encore+ TV. Once the grant ran out the series was removed again.

However, you can now watch all the episodes on Archive.org. Click here or do your own query and enter Urban+Angel+Encore+Drama in the Search field. Enjoy!

Hidden Hills

Hidden Hills is an American sitcom television series that aired on NBC from September 24, 2002, to January 21, 2003, during the 2002 fall line-up. Based on the book Surviving Suburbia, the series was created by Peter Segal and Ric Swartzlander. The theme song was Pleasant Valley Sunday, made famous by The Monkees. Mark Mothersbaugh (co-founder of Devo) performed the version used on the show.

Louis played family man Doug Barber – to this day it’s one of his all-time favorite roles!

Oddly enough, of the 18 episodes that were filmed the last 5 seem to have disappeared – only a Spanish-dubbed version of those episodes was rumored to have survived. Last month they unexpectedly showed up in a search on the Wayback Machine at Archive.org.

Click here to see the collection and download what you need! You can grab episodes 1-13 in the original English, and the Spanish-dubbed version of all 18 episodes. Please note that it is a huge download, a LAN connection is highly recommended, or leaving the download running overnight.

SCREEN CAPS

To celebrate the discovery of the 5 missing Hidden Hills episodes we have 440 screen caps of episode 114 The Feud.

In this episode we witness a chaotic birthday party where the cops show up, Doug’s super obnoxious neighbors and their ill-mannered dogs, Doug and Janine hosting a dinner for their friend Pam who is meeting her lover’s father for the first time and a wayward pregnancy test.

The fourth monthly reading series continues in Mr. Mugs – Rockets Away! – Part 2  by Martha Kambeitz and Denise Burns.

The Mr. Mugs books have been out of print for many years but occasionally you can find them on eBayAmazon Marketplace or various other antique book dealers.

Louis credits the Mr. Mugs books series with helping him to learn English at a very young age.

You can listen to all the previous book readings under the Reading Series Tab, and you can read and listen to the first half of this book herehttps://www.louisferreira.org/the-4th-reading-series/

Here is this month’s chapter.

The animals were tired of being
looked at. That was no fun. They wanted
to do something else for a change.

Bear got an idea. “Look,” he said.
“Let’s change things around. Who wants
my fur? I’m so tired of it! Who wants
my fur? You can have it for nothing.”

REGULATION TOOL OF THE DAY
Tapping the Collarbone (Vagus Nerve Stimulation)

Feeling the flutter of nerves before a take? Still carrying the residue of an emotional scene? Today’s simple, powerful tool is tapping gently on the collarbone, a method that stimulates the Vagus nerve, your body’s built-in calming switch.

Why it works:
The Vagus nerve plays a key role in regulating stress, digestion, heart rate, and emotional response. When gently stimulated – like through collarbone tapping – it sends a signal of safety to the nervous system, helping the body downshift from fight-or-flight into a more balanced, responsive state.

For performers:
Whether you’re navigating pre-scene jitters or emotional bleed-off from intense character work, this is a grounding tool that doesn’t suppress your emotional truth – it helps your body process and release it safely, so you can stay connected and clear.

For crew (and all humans in 2025):
Support doesn’t always look like “fixing.” Sometimes it’s about creating space for nervous systems to regulate. Offer a moment. Normalize this. Say: “Take your time, I got you.”
This isn’t about shutting down what your body’s telling you – it’s about creating a channel where you can hear it more clearly, and move forward from a place of grounded presence.

Reminder: Regulation tools are not about disconnecting. They’re about listening, responding, and reconnecting – to ourselves, to our work, and to each other.
