Haven Toronto and St. Michael’s Homes

It’s Official: Haven Toronto Joins SMHTO
On April 1, 2025, Haven Toronto officially joined Substance Use Mental Health Services Toronto (SMHTO), merging with St. Michael’s Homes and Our Place as a member agency.
Please note that this merger does not impact Haven Toronto’s programs or services. We continue to operate at our 170 Jarvis Street location, providing essential supports to elder, homeless, and marginally housed men 50 and over.
Through this merger, Haven is now better equipped to fulfill its mission. With enhanced administrative capacity and increased access to mental health and addiction program support from SMHTO, we are positioned to serve our clients more effectively than ever before.

The Power of Human Connection: What Happens When We Engage with People Experiencing Homelessness

Better Mental Health & Confidence
– Just talking to someone who’s homeless can help.
– Supportive interactions boost self-esteem and reduce mental health struggles.
– Programs with peer support show marked reductions in stigma and isolation.

Improved Physical Health & Less Substance Use. Social and peer support = healthier lives.
People engaged in community or physical activity-based programs show:
– Fewer risky behaviors
– Reduced substance use
– Higher well-being. 1 in 2 participants saw measurable improvements in both mental and physical health within months.
Kindness is powerful. A conversation, a moment of respect, or eye contact could be someone’s first step back toward stability.

Haven Calling: Donate a phone, Change a life

Haven Toronto is launching a mobile phone donation drive to collect cell phones and make them available to elder, homeless men aged 50+ — a community Haven has been serving in downtown Toronto for more than 92 years.
For our clients, a phone isn’t a convenience — it’s a lifeline. It connects them to health services , housing resources, community and family.

Donate used, factory reset or refurbished cell phones at:
170 Jarvis Street, Toronto, ON. M5B 2B7

Spring is here — but our shelves are only half full.
At Haven Toronto, we strive to support elder men facing homelessness with dignity and compassion. As the season changes, so do their needs — and right now, we’re falling short.
This shelf should be full.
We can do better. You can help!
Donate new or gently used spring clothing today – they go a long way in giving someone a fresh start this season.
-Light jackets
-Jeans
-Long-sleeve shirts
-Sneakers
-Socks (new only)
-Underwear (new only)
Drop off donations at Haven Toronto or visit haventoronto.ca to learn more.

Of course you can also give to the general operating fund of the organization by clicking on the logos below. Please note that you will be linked to our very own donations page which still bears the former name of the shelter – The Good Neighbours Club. Your donation will still arrive at Haven Toronto and St. Michael’s Homes.

The Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada

Children And Youth In Care Day was created because of young people in and from care who shared their stories and experiences through the My Real Life Book report. They wanted a day to be recognized for their contributions, strength, and resilience.

This Children And Youth In Care Day, we’re proud to spotlight the life-changing impact of mentoring.
With support from Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada, in partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters, programs like Big Steps to Success connects children as young as seven to caring adults building resilience, confidence, and community connection one person at a time.

These supports play a vital role in preventing the long-term effects of adverse childhood experiences.

Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada (CAFC)  is again proud to partner with the Ontario Association of Children’s Aid Societies (OACAS), on the Forget Me Not campaign, which highlights the experiences of children and youth asking us to be there for them, while calling for the need for more critical supports that help young people find meaningful work, heal from trauma, and secure safe and stable housing.
This year, a new element was added to the campaign. Produced in collaboration with OACAS, Humber College, Young People’s Theatre (YPT)Urban Market Campaign Inc., and  CAFC, the Shared Stories project gave 25 young lived experts the chance to write a play based on their stories.  A reading, staged at YPT in Toronto on May 8 gave audiences a raw and inspiring look at the child welfare system through the eyes of those living it.

IN MEMORY OF GIANCARLO

Louis’ little pugapoo friend Giancarlo passed away last week. There are countless photos of him in past issues of Ferreira Fest, but here are a few recent highlights of Giancarlo, Jackie and Louis. Thanks to Jackie for sharing them!

THE 4th READING SERIES: MR. MUGS – ROCKETS AWAY!

The fourth monthly reading series continues in Mr. Mugs – Rockets Away! – Part 2  by Martha Kambeitz and Denise Burns.
Unlike previous readers, this volume was published as a hardcover book within the Level 3 series of the Mr. Mugs readers. It was originally released in 1968. The Mr. Mugs books have been out of print for many years but occasionally you can find them on eBayAmazon Marketplace or various other antique book dealers.

Louis credits the Mr. Mugs books series with helping him to learn English at a very young age.

You can listen to all the previous book readings under the Reading Series Tab, and you can read and listen to the first half of this book herehttps://www.louisferreira.org/the-4th-reading-series/

Here is this month’s chapter.

Round and round
the room they went.

They were happy to be out!

Permission to Pause: A Moment for Clarity & Care

We live and work in an industry that moves fast.
Decisions. Deadlines. Gut reactions. High stakes.
But let’s normalize something: it’s okay to take a pause.

It’s okay to say:
“I care about this. I just need a little time to process. Can I get back to you once I’ve had a chance to sit with it?”

That’s not a delay—it’s a boundary.
That’s not resistance—it’s respect for your own nervous system, your values, and the clarity required to say yes (or no) from an informed, grounded place.
And if someone can’t honor that pause? That’s information too.
Not every space deserves your urgency.
Not every “opportunity” deserves your immediate yes. Take the pause. Trust your pace.
You’re allowed to care deeply and check in with yourself first.

Watch the full video for today’s boundary + regulation reminder. Here’s a report from a recent show that hired Aryn as Intimacy Coordinator:

“Still buzzing from working on Guards of Grouse as the Intimacy Coordinator – what an incredibly stacked cast and crew! This breakneck dark comedy flips the 007 world on its head and had me laughing on and off set. Think The Death of Stalin meets What We Do in the Shadows – and somehow even wilder.
Huge thanks to Bronwyn Carradine for connecting me with this team (so lovely to cross over from our theatre roots!), and to everyone who brought this world to life. It was an absolute thrill to choreograph intimacy for such sharp, hilarious material—and to do it at the Arts Club on my birthday, no less? Total gift.
Feeling grateful, inspired, and excited for what’s next.”

Patrick Gilmore

Patrick shared some photos of the final episode of Happy Face, which is streaming on Paramount Plus.

Here’s a continuity shot of Patrick’s final scene so the special effects makeup can be replicated in subsequent shots, should they become necessary.

And there’s also a beautifully lit moment of Patrick in the final episode.
Patrick calls it “Find the light”.

Patrick made a new friend!

“This is Gracie Blue Kane.

Four year old Leo.

Loves popcorn, puddles, and being an only child.

Refuses to swim. No interest in learning.
Snugs are non-negotiable.

Per her parents, she’s also considering a run for mayor of Deep Cove.”

Sawyer Ferreira

Sawyer turned 26 last month!

Her birthday is on Earth Day, so there are always lots of reason to celebrate!

Sawyer spent the day with her friends and a good time was had by all.

Have a piece of birthday cake, everyone!

Eric Banerd

Eric’s company Even Better Painting is in the busiest time of year for outdoor projects, but indoor jobs are still happening!

“We took these tired cabinets and gave them a sleek, modern refresh—and the difference speaks for itself. Clean lines, fresh color, and a finish built to last.

Thinking about updating your space? Let’s chat.”
