The Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada
This International Women’s Day, we asked women who grew up in care one powerful question: If you knew then what you know now, what would you tell your younger self?
Their answers are filled with wisdom, resilience, and hard-earned truths—reminders that the challenges they’ve faced don’t define them, that they are not alone, and that healing is possible.
Below Brianna shares her message to her younger self—a reflection on the weight we carry, the power of letting go, and the strength found in being truly seen.
“If I knew then what I know now…
I would tell my younger self — and every young girl out there — that the weight you’re carrying right now won’t always feel this heavy. The things that feel like they’re crushing you, the moments that feel like they’ll define you forever — they lose some of their power with time.
As you get older, you start to realize you’re not alone in carrying these invisible loads. Everyone’s got something. And when you meet the right people — the ones who don’t just see the version of you you put out for the world, but the one that’s still learning how to breathe under all that weight — they help you unpack it.
You learn to make peace with the parts of your story that used to make you feel small. You learn that sharing your burdens doesn’t make you weaker —. And you see that you’re not meant to hold it all by yourself.
If I knew then what I know now, I’d remind myself that the weight gets lighter — not because life gets easier, but because you learn to let the things that hurt go.”
At Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada, we’re proud to partner with the Child Development Institute (CDI) to deliver Mothers in Mind as part of the Safe at Home project. This initiative supports mothers who have experienced intimate partner violence, helping them build confidence, manage stress, and strengthen bonds with their young children. Intimate partner violence can have lasting impacts on children, especially those under four. Safe at Home helps families heal, prevent future violence, and create safer, more nurturing homes.
Mothers in Mind, a 12-week program supports mothers in exploring the impact of trauma on their parenting and their relationship with their child in a safe and supportive environment. To date, 117 mothers and 114 children have participated through partnerships with five child welfare agencies including those that are Indigenous-led. By supporting programs like Mothers in Mind, we help families heal, grow, stay together and thrive. Learn more about how we’re working with the Child Development Institute to support families.

Michael Iskander talks about starring in ‘House of David’ on Prime Video
“One of the most incredible things that happened on day one was actor Louis Ferreira, who plays Jesse, David’s father, and one of his first lines is from the Scripture and he says ‘Be strong, have courage, do not fear for fear is the enemy, fear is a thief.’ I think that was very timely, especially since a lion attacks David’s flock and he has to face his fear and he has to face this lion.”

Walk It Off: A Simple Reset for Your Nervous System
Sometimes, our bodies hold onto activation from social interactions, stress, or performance work—like an energy that needs somewhere to go. One of the simplest ways to regulate? Walking.
Getting outside, moving your body, and pairing it with mindful breath gives your system a way to dissipate excess energy and reset. I did this Wednesday night at an opening when I felt a bit of social anxiety—just stepping outside, breathing intentionally, and letting movement help my body settle made a huge difference.
Click on the screen cap to watch the video!

Try it:
Take a walk, even just around the block.
Breathe deeply—inhale through the nose, exhale through the mouth.
Notice how your body feels as you move—your feet on the ground, the air around you.
Your body wants to regulate; sometimes, it just needs a little help.
