Haven Toronto

The 3 Pillars Of Success

There are three pillars on which Haven Toronto’s success is built, and they are reducing barriers to food security, health care and housing. Record levels of client engagement in 2022 remind us of just how vital these supports are. A spike in the number of new clients reinforces that the need has never been greater.
Our monthly intake of new clients in 2022 was up 69% versus pre-pandemic numbers (2019). Compare that with the 2% to 3% percent increase in new clients that we historically experience year-over- year.

Poverty and homelessness are at crisis levels.
An internal survey last November revealed that 98% of clients partake in our Healthy Meals program. This is important as food is a gateway to other supports. Last year, we served over 83,000 meals, up over 100 percent compared to pre-pandemic numbers.
When clients come for a hot meal, we use that opportunity to get them in front of nurses and counsellors.
In 2022, our nurses and counsellors provided 19% more supports than the previous year. Housing and mental health supports were up 10%, and our foot clinic helped almost 7 times more clients.

Our ability to meet the growing need for support is made possible through donations. We are grateful for your support and we see, first-hand, the difference your donation makes. At the Shop & Share Site anything you purchase online goes directly to an elder homeless man in need – no middle man required – and there’s something for every budget!

Of course you can also give to the general operating fund of the organization by clicking on the logo below. Please note that you will be linked to our very own donations page which still bears the former name of the shelter – The Good Neighbours Club. Your donation will still arrive at Haven Toronto.

Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada Gala – Teddy Bear Affair

Always an affair to remember, Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada Gala – Teddy Bear Affair is an evening of elegance and inspiration in support of families, children, and youth whose lives have been involved in the child welfare system. This exclusive, black-tie event brings together like-minded philanthropists and leaders from across the country who believe, as we do, that all kids deserve a chance to live their dreams, to heal, to hope, and to thrive.
This year the Foundation is collaborating with The Indigenous Spirit Fund at the Native Child and Family Services of Toronto to produce the Gala. Looking through the lens of Indigenous-Futurism, an artistic movement that imagines what an Indigenous future might look like, we promise an evening of celebration and reflection that honors the richness, perseverance, and dynamism of Indigenous communities – one that supports a brighter future for them and all children who have experienced care. The Foundation Gala has raised over $38.9 million since its inception.

SCREEN CAPS

Prompted by the Motive agency shot above we have 357 screen caps from the first season episode 108 Undertow. Louis plays homicide detective Oscar Vega.

The killer: Charles Stanwyck, a building contractor. The victim: Taylor Hollis, a post-graduate student who dealt drugs on the side. Taylor had blunt force trauma to the head, but was killed by asphyxiation from what looks to be a plastic bag held over his head. Homicide believes his death may have something to do with his relationship to one of his former students, Sunita Rand. Sunny is engaged in what will be an arranged marriage, but eventually admits that she and Taylor were in love. Her father, Vijay, becomes a suspect. Further evidence points to Taylor having been in the vicinity of the restaurant just prior to his death, at a time when Charles, the contractor, would have been there. However, Homicide can’t tie Charles to Taylor’s murder. They may have to dig a little deeper into Charles’ life to find his motive. (adapted from IMDb)

THE 4th READING SERIES: MR. MUGS – ROCKETS AWAY!

The fourth monthly reading series continues in Mr. Mugs – Rockets Away! – Part 2  by Martha Kambeitz and Denise Burns.
Unlike previous readers, this volume was published as a hardcover book within the Level 3 series of the Mr. Mugs readers. It was originally released in 1968. The Mr. Mugs books have been out of print for many years but occasionally you can find them on eBayAmazon Marketplace or various other antique book dealers.

Louis credits the Mr. Mugs books series with helping him to learn English at a very young age.

You can listen to all the previous book readings under the Reading Series Tab, and you can read and listen to the first half of this book herehttps://louisferreira.org/the-4th-reading-series/

Here is this month’s chapter.

Listen to the sound clip here:

Chapter 38: Fun At School (continued)

… to be continued next month!

Pat saw some tigers there too.
When he went by they made some angry sounds.

Don’t look at me like that, Tiger.
Why can’t you be happy?
The chattering monkeys are.
I don’t think you like me!
Are you always so angry?
It’s a good thing you’re on the inside.
Your baby tigers love to tumble and play.
Don’t you? I guess not.
Good-bye. I’m going!

This was one of our largest projects of the summer so far! The walls of this industrial complex were in need of a refresh, with vandalism, dirt, and grime coating the exterior of the building. We loved working on this project!

We refreshed this exterior with Benjamin Moore in the color Normandy, and we love how it turned out! We still have a few openings for exterior projects before we say goodbye to summer, get in touch with us at 604-359-7979 for a free quote!

Ingrid Rogers

There’s 45 years between these two pictures. Too much living to try and encapsulate in one caption but to my 10 year old self I’d say “you did great baby girl. You didn’t have a lot of guidance but you found your way to all the right answers.”

And to my 55 year old self, I say “Congratulations lady, you’re on fire! You persisted to forge a creative and fulfilling life. Your friends and family are dynamite and the best is yet to come”.

Truly, I’m so electrified by this time of life. Age is only a number and I will never let it define or limit my enthusiasm for life.

At 55 I’ve been through the hard knocks and I’m still shining because I’m a fighter and resilient and I have a sensitive and expansive heart. The spark that that little girl had is magnified tenfold by wisdom and experience and as long as I have the privilege of walking this earth I will continue to encourage the spark to grow. There is no limitation to how much we can learn and grow and share and give.
Keep going. Keep living. Keep expanding.
Love,
Ingrid (then and now)

Lemon Curd Tarts

“These bright and tangy fresh lemon curd tarts are made with lemons that were picked right from our yard. If you love lemons then this is a must try. Happy baking friends!”

Crust Ingredients:
3/4 cup rolled oats
1/4 cup almond flour
3 medjool dates
2 tsp coconut oil at room temperature

Method:
Preheat oven to 350F.
Soak your dates in hot water for 5 minutes to soften.
Add the GF oats, almond flour, dates, and coconut oil to a food processor. Process for 15 to 30 seconds to blend. Test the mixture by pressing it between your fingers, it should hold together well.
Prepare your mini tart pans. Scoop an equal amount of crumb into your pans and press the crumb into them.
Bake tarts for 5 mins.

Lemon Curd Ingredients:
1 cup full fat coconut Milk. (Use the thick white coconut)
1/2 cup fresh squeezed lemon juice
1 tbsp lemon zest
1 cup granulated cane sugar
1/4 cup cornstarch
2 tbsp vegan butter
Sprinkle of turmeric for color
1/8 tsp sea salt

Method:
Add all of the ingredients to a small pot and heat over medium, whisking frequently until the mixture thickens.
Remove from heat.

If you can still see little chunks of cornstarch, use an immersion blender and blend in the pot until smooth. It should be quite thick at this point.
Spread warm lemon curd filling into the mini tart pans. Chill in the fridge until the lemon curd is cool and firm.

Enjoy!
