Haven Toronto
Haven Toronto is not only the city’s only daytime shelter for elder homeless men, it is also a tireless advocate for affordable housing and a rich font of information about the causes and cures for homelessness and the many physical and mental challenges associated with it.
A Step Forward For Elder Homelessness
The next time you see an elder homeless man, ask yourself, “How did they get there?” You can take the question to mean “how did they end up homeless” but we are thinking in simpler terms. How did they literally get to that place on the street, in the park, at the store, etc.? The answer is they most likely walked.
Walking for hours through all kinds of conditions, including rain and snow, is hard on shoes and harder on feet. Haven Toronto’s Foot Clinic is a step forward in care for elder homeless men.

Social Isolation Has Life-Threatening Consequences
Friendship is a lot like food. We need it to survive. What’s more, we seem to have a basic drive for it. Psychologists find that human beings have fundamental need for inclusion in group life and for close relationships. We are truly social animals.
The upshot is, we function best when this social need is met. It is easier to stay motivated, to meet the varied challenges of life.
In fact, evidence has been growing that when our need for social relationships is not met, we fall apart mentally and even physically.

SHOWS NEWS
Shôgun
Louis has completed filming for his episodes in the new FX/ Hulu mini-series Shôgun.
Set in the 17th Century, the story is told from the perspective of British hero John Blackthorne, a sailor who rises from outsider to samurai, while being used as a pawn in Japanese leader Toranaga’s struggle to reach the top of the ruling chain, or Shôgun.
SCREEN CAPS
This month we have 427 screen caps of the Motive episode #107 Out of the Past.
Synopsis:
The Killer: Dr. Monika Harper, a pediatric surgeon, who emigrated to Canada from the Czech Republic in 1995. The Victim: Hank Cousineau, a store owner who was once in the military, with one of his assignments being on the UN peacekeeping mission in the Balkans. Hank was killed in the back of his store by his throat being slashed, from which he bled to death. Detectives Oscar Vega and Angie Flynn initially believe that his killer is a group of young men who were demanding protection money from local shopkeepers. But the detectives’ focus changes when they discover that over the past week Hank had been stalking the Harper family: Dr. Monika Harper, her husband Professor Desmond Harper and their son Phillip Harper. They can’t find any connection between Hank and any of the Harpers until they find out a little more about Monika Harper and what happened to her before 1995. (adapted from IMDb)

THE 4th READING SERIES: MR. MUGS – ROCKETS AWAY!
The fourth monthly reading series continues in Mr. Mugs – Rockets Away! by Martha Kambeitz and Denise Burns.
Unlike previous readers, this volume was published as a hardcover book within the Level 3 series of the Mr. Mugs readers. It was originally released in 1968. The Mr. Mugs books have been out of print for many years but occasionally you can find them on eBay, Amazon Marketplace or various other antique book dealers.
Louis credits the Mr. Mugs books series with helping him to learn English at a very young age.
You can listen to all the previous book readings under the Reading Series Tab.
Here is this month’s chapter.

Chapter 22: Pat Runs Away
Pat Runs Away
Pat was angry. He didn’t want to go to his room. He wanted to see that nest.
Pat thoughts and thought.
Then he got an idea.
“I’ll run away.
I don’t like it here.
You can’t have fun around here.
Let’s go, Mr. Mugs.”
Pat got his things and off they went.
Mother saw Pat go.
She was sad about it.
“He thinks this is a good idea but he’ll be sorry.
I’ll see what he does.”
… to be continued next month!
Pat and Mr. Mugs went away down the street.
“They’ll be sorry tonight when we don’t come home,” thought Pat.
On and on they went.
Pat said nothing.
He thought and thought.
