And voilà, another 20th of the month rolls around and here’s our party at Ferreira Fest where we follow the acting career of Louis Ferreira and catch up with his charities and friends! We have a little less for you this time, as Hurricane Irma and subsequent power and internet outages made the usual big party impossible, but we’re all still here to enjoy each other’s company, and our friend Karyn Mott has sent in a report, so grab your favorite pineapple drink at our virtual bar and come on in!

Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada

Children’s Aid Foundation adds ‘of Canada’ to its name to reflect its current national reach and is asking Canadians to help improve the future for kids in care. Children’s Aid Foundation officially becomes Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada and launches its national campaign for child welfare – Stand Up for Kids. Canadians can help shape the future for children and young people living in care of the child welfare system who urgently need their support by signing the pledge at standupforkids.ca.

In Canada, more than 235,000 children and youth live with the threat of abuse, neglect or abandonment and over 67,000 live in foster care without permanent families. The reasons why children come into care are complex, but are never a child’s fault. They can include poverty, addiction, mental health challenges, isolation and lack of a parenting support network, and the legacy of intergenerational trauma.

Without support, they face incredible odds to a brighter future; less than 50 per cent will graduate high school and they are 200 times more likely than their peers to experience homelessness. In addition, 82% of kids in care are diagnosed with special needs and nearly all have experienced childhood trauma.

At standupforkids.ca, Canadians can join the movement to create change for kids in care in Canada by:
· Signing the Stand Up for Kids pledge
· Finding out how to become a Stand Up for Kids ally in the community
· Donating to Stand Up for Kids in order to help remove barriers that limit the potential of children and young people in and from care

Here’s a recap of what the episode is about:

The victim: Sienna, a prostitute who used her life coaching company as a front. The killer: Stephanie Carson, a jealous wife and controlling mother who works as an investment advisor purportedly earning seven figures. Sienna’s dead body is found in the bathroom of her “office” i.e. a downtown condo, she has been injected with a fatal dose of pentobarbital in the neck, and the word “SLUT” written on her forehead in lipstick. Besides Sienna’s work as a prostitute and the need to interview her clients, most specifically those that were scheduled the day of and after her death, the detectives learn that she was also a mild-mannered suburban housewife named Erica Grey. Her husband, Doug Grey agreed that after their marriage she would continue her business, with set boundaries. As Sienna’s client list comes up with dead ends, the detectives begin to suspect that Stephanie’s suburban housewife life, which includes being heavily involved in her daughter Jayda’s gymnastics club, may be the reason for her death. When they discover Stephanie as the killer, they find that the motive has more to do with Stephanie’s core as a person than with Sienna’s business. Meanwhile, Angie and Oscar are also investigating Derek Caster’s murder, believing that Neville Montgomery had something to do with it. (adapted from IMDb)

THE NEW READING SERIES: MR. MUGS – MEET MY PALS

The second monthly reading series is Mr. Mugs – Meet My Pals by Martha Kambeitz, Denise Burns and Josephine Proctor.

Louis credits the Mr. Mugs books series with helping him to learn English at a very young age. The Mr. Mugs books have been out of print for many years but occasionally you can find them on eBay, Amazon Marketplace or various other antique book dealers.

Karyn Mott

Karyn has recently filmed an episode of Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, and then she spent half a month traveling through Europe. Catch some great photos on her Twitter feed!

Below is a great account of her day on the set of Dirk Gently.

“In the middle of the Summer I had the opportunity to play with the amazingly talented cast and crew of Dirk Gently Season 2. It was a day I will not soon forget. The second season, much like the first, is a perfect mixture of sci-fi and supernatural, mixed in with some great comedy and truth. The whole premise of the show is centered around the power of coincidence and that in itself makes it a unique show for an audience to watch. The second season is going to be a roller coaster ride for viewers and I cannot wait to see the final product in just a few weeks’ time.

I played the role of Betty – the hospital receptionist and nurse.

Arriving there at 6:30 in the morning was a gift of grace all onto itself… for some reason night buses and night transit make me nervous… like what if they don’t show up? But show up the bus did and I was headed to set. I was able to spend the hour and a half in transit really focusing on the connection of my character to the story and on how I was helping the leads advance in their story. I think we sometimes forget when coming in to do an episode of a show, it’s easy to think “Oh, how can I make my character shine?” but in reality what I am there for is to help the main characters advance in their story arc. Having the time on the bus and Skytrain really allowed me to focus on that need.

When I got to set out on Riverview Hospital (formerly an insane asylum) I could feel the energy of all those who had been there. It was an immensely powerful moment. I was kindly directed to the trailers and there I met my wonderful stunt double Heidi, we immediately hit it off and ended up having a blast, not only working and playing the scene together but in getting to know each other and sharing several laughs together. It’s amazing to watch the craft of a stunt performer: the shot is set up and then they come in and do something so complicated with such ease and comfort. It is such a craft and something I admire immensely.

I was sent into hair and make-up and almost immediately taken to set and met Richard Laxton, the director. He explained the scene and how we would be filming and then took the time to have a dialogue with me about the needs of the scene and my character! What a gift, not every director has the time to do that but he made sure that I felt comfortable in what I was doing and supported any questions I had.

I then had the opportunity to meet my scene partner, the amazing Amanda Walsh – what a brilliant actor, having the opportunity to watch her transform into this character was an absolute gift and honour to watch. Sometimes I feel like it’s ridiculous I get paid to play with such amazing and inspiring performers.

When we started to film the scene the first few shots went great, and then the director came and asked me to add a line of dialogue and instantly I felt this fear creep over me, not something that is useful to actors to feel, but that’s what happened. The amazing power behind it was that instead of feeling incompetent and running with those negative thoughts that started to jump into my mind I took the time to move through that fear so that I could move forward and do my job. My mind kept playing tricks on me saying things like “Oh you’re not giving him what he wants, you’re frustrating him” – all of these thing completely useless in the situation. So I took a moment to connect back into my breath, to remind myself of the character and to honour myself and my work. After taking that moment we did the shot again with the new line and immediately after I heard “Cut!” Richard came and in and said “That was exactly what I needed, thank you!”. I learned a valuable lesson in that moment: I am the conduit of something greater than me, speaking through me, and when I take the moment to acknowledge the fear and then tap back into the reality of the situation, the gift of acting that I have been given and the vessel I have to perform that through, I was able to do exactly what was needed. Sometimes it takes these small but intense moments of fear to actually process what is going on and to allow myself to move into a more truthful and honest space.

We wrapped that scene and then it was on to the big scene. As they took the time to set up the next shot, Elijah Wood walked into the room and straight up to me. He said he had watched the scene we had just filmed and that he thought my ability to take the note that was given and the immediate transfer into the next shot was inspiring to watch… I felt a sense of deep gratitude for his compliment and in my own ability to have worked through that moment. We all convened for lunch break and I was again gifted with the opportunity to see the humble nature of profoundly talented actors. There was no ego there, people chatted together about life and art and it was astounding to be part of the conversation and to witness people who have outstanding talent and career credits behind them be some generous with their time and energy. They offered space for discussion and dialogue when they didn’t have to.

We filmed the next scene after lunch and again it was just such an honour to witness these actors (Samuel Barnett, Elijah Wood, Jade Eshete, Izzie Steele) do their craft, to so effortlessly flow into a natural dialogue with each other. I watched as they took notes and then flowed, seemingly with little effort, into the next take. They truly played with and off each other and made everything look natural.

All I can say is from the scripts I read, the costumes I saw and the actors shooting, this season is going to be more risky, more daring, more edge-of-the-seat thrilling that the first!”

The Canadian Film Centre (CFC) and Bell Media are pleased to welcome renowned writer/producer Dennis Heaton as the Executive Producer in Residence of the 2017 Bell Media Prime Time TVProgram, presented in association with ABC Signature Studios. From September to December 2017, Heaton will lead the story room as well as the soon-to-be-announced television writers selected to participate in this year’s program as they work together to develop Heaton’s original series.
