CHARITIES

When Louis first started getting involved in Ferreira Fest in the Fall 0f 2011 it was our big goal to work towards charitable causes that we - his friends, supporters and fans - could promote. Now you, honored guests, are able to give back something for every photo Louis has shared, every question of yours he's answered, every tweet of yours he's responded to, every story of his that has touched us.

Giving to those in need, serving society for the greater good and sharing our good fortunes with those who have fallen upon hard times are essential expressions of the human spirit, and to many of us, including Louis, it comes naturally. Doing good makes you feel good. Giving makes you richer. Sharing creates communities.

Please support our charities!

Haven Toronto (The Good Neighbours' Club)

Message from Executive Director Lauro Monteiro:

Today we unveil a new strategic plan for the long-term benefit of the men we serve. Key to this is the renaming of The Good Neighbours’ Club to Haven Toronto. The word “haven” aptly describes us as a place of safety for our men, who can often be further victimized while on the streets. To emphasize this, we will position ourselves as “a sanctuary for elder homeless men”. That’s not all, however.

We have a new vision and mission

Our vision is a safe and just community in which elder homeless men have the opportunity to live a quality, dignified life. Our mission is to be a national leader of services, program delivery and advocacy focused on elder homeless men.

We have a new website

The new website (www.haventoronto.ca) will more accurately reflect the services and
programs that Haven Toronto provides, and will feature news regarding Haven Toronto activities and events. It will also feature a new video that highlights stories from the men we serve and the experiences of our volunteers, donors, partners and staff. Our social media sites will also be linked and feature the many faces and stories about the organization and the men we serve.

What isn’t new is our ongoing support for elder men who are homeless, marginally housed and socially isolated. This commitment began in 1933 during the height of the Great Depression, some of the toughest times this country has ever seen, and will continue going forward.

Why are we doing this?

We have three key objectives:
1) revitalize our identity to make it more contemporary and relevant;
2) increase awareness of our services within the Greater Toronto Area;
3) improve engagement with all stakeholders including the men we serve, volunteers, donors, partners and staff.

This year marks a new foundation of growth for Haven Toronto, and we welcome you to share your comments and input on this journey. Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,
Lauro Monteiro
Executive Director

Watch a great new video about Haven Toronto!

Haven Toronto is a charity based in Toronto that operates a day center for elder homeless, marginally housed and socially isolated men over 50. Haven Toronto offers services that include counseling, housing outreach, access to nurses, system navigation, meals, clothing, mail and telephone service, access to computers and much more.

Haven Toronto, formerly known as The Good Neighbours’ Club, was founded in Winnipeg in 1933 during the great depression to help unemployed men. May Birchard, the founder, was a politician and anti-poverty activist. She opened a new chapter of the club when she moved to Toronto. Haven Toronto has had a storied history and has played an integral role in helping elder homeless men in need. In fact, the agency is the only organization focused on elder homeless men (men 50 and over) in Canada.

In Toronto, there are almost 3,000 men over the age of 50 years old in homeless emergency shelters annually.  Many hundreds more sleep outdoors and in other precarious accommodations.  The number of seniors who are homeless has doubled in four years. Haven Toronto is their sanctuary, a place where they can feel at home, where they are always welcome and treated with dignity and respect.

Open 8am to 5pm, 365 days a year, Haven Toronto provides the essential services they need for their day-to-day lives. Haven Toronto provides access to healthy and affordable meals, laundry facilities, clothing, recreational amenities, showers, computers and phone services and messages. In addition, a mailing address, counselling and basic medical services are offered to help clients with any challenges and difficulties.

Most importantly, it’s a place where elder, homeless men can feel safe, where they can form and cultivate friendships and become part of a community, something that is important for each and every one of us. Please consider supporting Haven Toronto today. Thank you.

Supporting At-Risk Youth Through Financial Literacy

With the generous support of Citi Canada funding, the Children’s Aid Foundation has been able to support the Pape Adolescent Resource Centre’s (PARC) Financial Literacy Training and Pre-Employment Program for at-risk youth involved with the child welfare system. The program offers a practical money management and pre-employment curriculum for youth ages 16-24,living in Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area.

Specifically designed to assist young people who are transitioning to independent living from foster care, and faced with the often overwhelming reality of budgeting and financial independence, the in-person program, which runs for one night over the course of 15 weeks, aims to help vulnerable youth build stability.

From learning how to pay rent, to budgeting for groceries, building good credit scores, and starting a savings account, participants are encouraged to think critically about their finances and invest early. Many youth in care are not taught these practical skills throughout their childhoods, and once they transition to independent living, are completely unprepared for the financial realities of adulthood. This can result in dependence on social services and even homelessness.

TRAVELERS

The first season of Brad Wright's time travel show Travelers has concluded its run. As we wait for news about season 2 here's an excerpt from an AVClub interview with the show's lead Eric McCormack where Louis gets a mention.

AVC: You worked with Brad Wright on The Outer Limits in the ’90s, but it was a while before you did another sci-fi project. With The Andromeda Strain miniseries, you got to appear in a Michael Crichton adaptation, which must have been pretty cool.

EM: Indeed. I really liked it, and I don’t know that it ever had the effect they were hoping for. I don’t know if they got the audience we were hoping for. But I thought it was very fun, and I loved the character I was playing. He was not in the original film, but he was kind of a Geraldo Rivera almost kind of reporter that had a drug addiction. We start the story in rehab, and then he gets the roots of the story. I loved him. He was very different than anything I’d played.
In fact, there’s a scene I have in a tent with Louis Ferreira, who just did an episode of
Travelers. He was in the fourth episode of Travelers playing another team leader, and we really have it out, not unlike the way we did in the tent in Andromeda.

Q&A

Louis answers a question from one of our readers.

Hi Louis,
Just wanted to take the opportunity to thank you for those lovely readings you’ve been doing. My son Zachary had his 6th birthday last week. He is a HUGE fan of your Mr. Mugs book readings – he’s got them all memorized. All he wanted for his birthday was a Mr Mugs book. My husband managed to score one on eBay. Zachary was the happiest kid on earth with that little book. So I was wondering: What was the best birthday gift you ever got?
Kind regards,
Your friend Janna

LF – Oh, oh, I got one. Okay, so I got, when I was, let’s just say, seven or eight, I got a bag filled with toy soldiers. One hundred toy soldiers. So I could set up all kinds of scenarios with the soldiers.

I used to collect stamps, I used to get stamps, 3D stamps, a 3D stamp collection. I used to get cards,  they were animals, they were, like National Geographic has a thing filled with [them], I would get a different animal every week or something.

Thanks to Casey for the transcript!

"In the season of awards, none resonates more than Kids In The Spotlight. These kids living in the LA Foster system put everything they have into making these films. All their love, devotion and tireless energy is on every page that they write - And in every scene of these films. Mo McRae, Tige Charity, Tamesha Scott - Thank your for continuing to give these kids a platform and for allowing me to be a small part of your Herculean efforts. This month Nicole writes:

So the other day I was looking at my chopping board and decided it needed an overhaul. So I plastered it with some henna. I haven't done this before but I consulted with others who have and they affirm that the henna stain is safe and doesn't transfer a taste to the food. Yay! Looking forward to using my renovated chopping board. The picture shows the board with henna paste freshly applied.

ODDS & ENDS

   IMDb Top 5000

Louis was back in the IMDb top 5000 in the 1st and 2nd week of January, undoubtedly catapulted back to those lofty heights due to his recent roles in Travelers and Aftermath.

A Blast from the Past:  Tony Danza

Tony starred in one of Louis' earliest movies, Doing Life, which is based on the true story of Jerry Rosenberg, the world's first convict turned attorney. When two cops are dead and he's the chief suspect, Jerry finds himself in a maximum security prison awaiting the death penalty. One night, as a fellow inmate is executed, Jerry resolves to save himself by studying law. Louis plays a young convict named Bobby who joins Rosenberg in his legal studies. Screencaps can be found here.

During the 1980s, Tony Danza was one of TV’s most famous sitcom stars thanks to roles in Taxi and Who’s the Boss? Two decades later, though, he traded in stardom for the even tougher job of teaching high-school English. Based in Philadelphia, Danza has since published a book detailing his experiences and his concern for the American education system.
