CURRENT EVENTS

The outbreak of violence and hatred and plain rudeness since the US presidential election has left many of us in fear and distress on what the next four years will bring to our minority brothers and sisters.

Listen to the sound clip here:

LF – We have to remember that we are all the same. That that is our core. The sad thing, we have, for years, and over the years, all we do is, we don’t embrace our similarities, we argue and fight and kill over our differences. If we all remembered we all bleed red, and we all are spirits, and we all are born the same, exact way, and also that we all want the same things: love, to feel safe, to care, all those things, all the dreams, everybody wants that.

If we could just remember that, and we could look at each other with that knowledge, that we are all the same, the world would be a completely different place.

But we’re too arrogant and conceited and egotistical and narcissistic to actually give ourselves that credit.

Because if it looks different than me, then I gotta wonder why, and somehow make a judgement on it.

And then away we go. Our ego takes over. It’s just awful. I do believe that we need to voice our concerns and our love of each other.

We have to go, okay, what can I do?

Again, what I just said about the similarities, to me, is the core thing, so, I try to go, I’m gonna love more, I’m gonna be kinder, I’m going to be more patient. I’m going to… And I’m also going to be less tolerant.

When I see the ignorance, when I see the stupidity, I’m gonna not support it. I’m not going to sit there and be like, yeah, whatever. It’s ugly. Right now it’s so ugly.

The Good Neighbours' Club

News from the Good Neighbours' Club social media pages:

"The winter holiday season will soon be upon us. We are hosting our Members’ Christmas Lunch on Thursday December 15 and need your help to stuff 150 gift bags. If you or anyone you know can help us out with small items – socks, toiletries, stationary, gift cards, etc. – please let us know."

Here is a CBC interview about the high number of homeless veterans with former Executive Director Dr. Bruno Scorsone and one of the GNC members who is a veteran and homeless.

Annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner
"Our volunteers are the greatest. Last week, we hosted our annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner at the Toronto Bond Place Hotel to give thanks to those who help us sort clothing, wash dishes, provide foot care, mop floors, sit on our Board of Directors and more."

The renovation at the GNC building is ongoing. Currently the roof is being replaced - just in time for the winter ahead.

"No, we are not opening a catering social enterprise! Roof requires major replacement. All mechanical components have to be removed. Including our walk-in fridge and freezer compressor. A lot of food when you do 46,000 meals in a year. A least the portable units are nice looking. Great job by staff and clients as we make the transfer today."

As the cold season approaches the homeless are in dire need of shelter - both day and night. Help the Good Neighbours' Club get them out of the cold. Click on the logo below to contribute - every penny helps.

The Children's Aid Foundation

With your cash donation, Children’s Aid Foundation will provide essential supports for kids and youth like counseling and post-trauma therapies, enrichment opportunities and life skill development like camp, cooking classes, and recreation programs, and education interventions like tutoring and learning disability assessments and accommodations.

Visit our Hope for the Holidays page to make a cash, gift, or tribute donation, or to order assorted or customized holiday cards."

TRAVELERS

Louis' episode of Travelers aired last week. There is a spoiler-free preview of the episode here.

Episode 4 is titled Hall, after Louis' character, Rick Hall. Curiously enough, Louis' character in Primeval: New World was also in the military: Colonel Henderson Hall. If you compare Henderson with Rick (whose military mug shot appears in the episode) the similarities are uncanny. Coincidence? Of course not! Hint: it was the same director...

Rick Hall, Travelers

Henderson Hall, PNW

THIS LIFE

Louis has a recurring role on the CBC drama This Life, playing David Crowley, the estranged ex-husband of the main character Natalie Lawson, played by Torri Higginson.

TV-eh? had a great write-up about David Crowley in the episode Joyride. Here's an excerpt:

"This Life‘s writers have done an admirable job of making Natalie’s ex-husband, David, a complex and relatable character – even as he’s tried to push his way back into a family that long ago learned to live without him. In this week’s episode, Joyride, we meet David’s second wife, Kate, and see him struggle to find balance between his two families. As is typical with this show, the solutions aren’t easy. [...] David is strangely likable. Disarmingly upfront about his flaws and, at times, maddeningly reasonable, deadbeat David has become one of my favourite characters on the show. This Life writers and Louis Ferreira for the win."

Read the whole piece here.

Louis has similar feelings about the character.

Listen to the sound clip here:

LF – That character to me, on This Life, which is, it has great significance in my own personal life about fathers not giving up on their children, and it doesn’t matter when you realize that. Because he did screw up, but you can always right a wrong and sometimes people just don’t have the courage to face the wrong, so they would rather look away. But, the damage that’s done, especially to your children, is just horrendous, so that speaks loudly to me, personally. You know.

FF – Right, right. Well, I also like that he’s not made out to be as evil as Natalie sees him on occasion.

LF – That’s just the thing, I mean, he’s kind of like, listen, I might have been a crappy husband and I might have done some crappy things, but I’m a good man now, and that’s valid. It doesn’t mean, it doesn’t take away what I’ve done. And he accepts responsibility, but he’s also like, but I want to be part of my children’s lives now and I am their father. That’s commendable to me. And I think that’s something that’s powerful to me.

FF – Yeah. Well, it’s never too late to make a new beginning.

LF – Exactly. It’s never too late.

FF – As many bad things as happen, that is always a credit to him, that he is trying to make a new beginning.

LF – Yeah.

FF – And, you know, that’s commendable, and it’s hard for Natalie to see that, of course, because she only sees the hurt, but maybe she’s coming around and she sees that his point is valid, too, and it’s not just because she’s dying. Maybe there are other reasons.

LF – I will not give away any secrets.

Thanks to Casey for the transcript!

AFTERMATH

Louis voices the radio personality Bob 'Moondog' Black in the new SyFy series Aftermath. Here are the sound clips and transcripts of the last few episodes. Aftermath airs on SyFy on Tuesdays at 10pm.

   Episode 5: A Clatter and a Chatter

Listen to the sound clip here:

Bob ‘Moondog’ Black – I’m a llama, I’m a rama, I’m a ding dang dong. With licks like this you can never go wrong.

Joshua Copeland – Hey.

Brianna Copeland – Hey. What is that?

Joshua Copeland – That’s Bob Black.

Brianna Copeland – Why are you listening to it?

Joshua Copeland – Well, you know, it’s actually right about things.

   Episode 6: Madame Sosostris

Listen to the sound clip here:

Joshua Copeland – Do we really have to listen to that?

Jane – There’s nothing else on.

Joshua Copeland – Well, a pep talk from the 'hood just isn’t going to help us.

Jane – It can’t hurt.

Bob ‘Moondog’ Black - Water above and fire below, the next week’s gonna bubble and glow. And the next priest should be some kind of chief with hot rocks from deep and down the roads. Won’t be raining when it explodes, it will be rainier, if you’ll pardon my eruption.

Joshua Copeland – Mt. Rainier?

Bob ‘Moondog’ Black – And what happens when the underground leaves dark behind and burns out bright. I don’t think this thing blows tonight, but soon, aficionados – soon.

Joshua Copeland – Is he talking about Mt. Rainier erupting?

Jane – I don’t know what he’s talking about, I just like the sound.

Episode 7: What the Thunder Said

Listen to the sound clip here:

Matt – Since when do you care about Moondog?

Joshua – We’ll live or die based on which way the volcano erupts. And he might know.

Bob ‘Moondog’ Black – … telephones were paperweights these days. And I tell ‘em straight. I tell them all, both less and great, it is the beast from the east where the boat of Ra pulls out from every morning. Oh, my chicks and chickens, seventy miles of death in three directions, ten to twenty to the west. So let’s remember that Greeley lie, go west young man, ‘cause you go east and you will die.

Matt – Shit.

Joshua – What?

Matt – We’re going east. Turn around, go west.

Joshua – Ah, we can’t, we can’t do that, we’ll slip back into the volcano.

Matt – Okay, we go north, or south.

Joshua – There’s no other way.

Bob ‘Moondog’ Black – … to remind us that life is one sweet kiss then turn off the bliss. This next load goes to all those chrome-dome strangers on the road looking for a place to lay their hats tonight. Godspeed all travelers.

Matt – You’re right, there’s nowhere else north or south.

Joshua – Let me see...

Bob 'Moondog' Black did not speak in episode 8: Here is no Water but only Rock.

Check back next month for more Moondog clips! And for more on how Louis developed the distinct voice of Bob 'Moondog' Black, listen to the sound clip here:

FF – How did you come up with the voice for Moondog? For Bob ‘Moondog’ Black in Aftermath?

LF – When I sat down, Bill, the creator who also did Missing, came over and talked to me about it, he was trying to, he had sent me a bunch of people that he thought would be good. So he thought what would be good would be the Beatnik poet meets Tom Waits meets Wolfgang, Wolfgang Jack? Is that Jack? Yeah, that was his name, who was that guy? Wolfgang Jack. Yeah, it was that DJ. Wolfman, the Wolfman, you know Wolfman Jack? Yeah, Wolfman Jack.

And there was a couple, there was one or two more that I can’t remember right now, but Cassady was another one. Neal Cassady, I think?

And he was like, yeah, so that’s kind of what it was. Because he wrote it kind of like Beatnik poetry.

Like he said Moondog talks… and yet as he starts getting to more episodes you realize that Moondog is actually dialed into what’s happening.

Thanks to Casey for all the transcripts!

  • The new series Bike-B-Q has a trailer:
"We're cooking up a new series for your comedic taste buds! Bike-B-Q will be hitting the streets of the interwebs in a matter of weeks! We hope you enjoy this bite-size piece, starring two guys that are practically muppets, Rocco Bates and Gary Starkell!"

Meet the characters of Bike-B-Q:

Together they lament the golden ages of yesteryear and attempt to figure out how to swallow the bitter taste of today’s reality. But when Captain Kale, an ex-colleague turned sell-out, shows up to the diner where they host their meetings, they’re forced to re-examine their definition of what it means to be a success."  (stop-motion, animated short)

Amanda writes:

"My last day on The 100 was Friday October 21. And by day I mean Night(s). LOL. It's been a crazy show but I've had a great time. On to the next.... I start Altered Carbon in November.  Altered Carbon is a huge 10 episode Netfix original.  Gonna be big and awesome."

Altered Carbon is set in a future where consciousness is digitized and stored in cortical stacks implanted in the spine, allowing humans to survive physical death by having their memories and consciousness "re-sleeved" into new bodies. The story follows specially trained "Envoy" soldier Takeshi Kovacs, who is downloaded from an off-world prison and into the body of a disgraced cop at the behest of Laurens Bancroft, a highly influential aristocrat. Bancroft was killed, and the last automatic backup of his stack was made hours before his death, leaving him with no memory of who killed him and why. While police ruled it a suicide, Bancroft is convinced he was murdered and wants Kovacs to find out the truth. (Source: IMDb)

Louis' former MOTIVE co-star Kristin Lehman also stars in the new series.

HEALING BODY ART

Every month Vancouver artist Nicole Pilich shares one of her henna creations with Ferreira Fest. Please visit her website for lots more photos and fascinating facts and information about this ancient artform. And if you find yourself in Vancouver - visit her studio and treat yourself to some Healing Body Art made just for you.

This month Nicole writes:

So this weekend I am working at the Vancouver Fan Expo, doing henna for a writer to promote his books. He is a very interesting person who works at the UN in Holland on war crime tribunals; he also is an accomplished musician and recorded his music at Abbey Road in England. His writing and working at the Cons is a hobby to divert his mind from the ugly proceedings in his day job.

So I get to hang out with him today and do a free henna tattoo from his book on any willing individuals. It's actually a very cool tattoo so many people choose it. Here is one from yesterday, along with a picture of the writer, Iain Reading and one of the volunteers from the con sporting the henna tattoo.

You can check out the book this tattoo is about at http://www.dragonofthemonthclub.com/

For those who celebrate:

Happy Thanksgiving from Ferreira Fest!

And here's a short reading by Louis which right now is more relevant than ever:

One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people. He said, “My son, the battle is between two wolves inside the soul. One is evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority and ego. The other is good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith”. The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: “Which Wolf wins?” The old Cherokee simply replied: “The one you feed.”
