Project Limelight

Project Limelight is open to young people aged 8 to 15 in the Vancouver Strathcona district. The average session is four months long and runs three days a week.

The first month is spent learning skills, techniques and forms of expression, including clowning, creative writing, voice work, movement and improvisation. The following three months are spent rehearsing a full-length theatrical production, leading up to a final performance on a community stage, giving participants the opportunity to showcase everything they have accomplished.

Each workshop is spent bringing the kids together in different scenarios so by the end of the first month they are a tightly knit group ready to take on the hurdles of a production. Instructors are experts in their fields, bringing unique experience and energy to the program. Project Limelight works with creative professionals who want to pass their skills and their passion on to the next generation by creating a fun-filled, safe environment that inspires kids to express themselves.

Project Limelight welcomes youth ages 8 to 15 living in East Vancouver to join the waitlist for future programs. No audition required.

Please help those kids receive a no-cost high quality performing arts education by clicking on the logo below - it's easy and secure!

Haven Toronto

Haven Toronto
is a drop-in center where elder homeless, marginally housed and socially isolated men can feel safe, where they can form and cultivate friendships, and become part of a community.

Our VISION is a safe and just community in which elder homeless men have the opportunity to live a quality, dignified life.

Our MISSION is to be a national leader in services, programs and advocacy for elder homeless men.

After a summer break there is a new E-magazine chock-full of great information and topics that will interest everyone. Click on the thumbnail on the right to read it online!

Since Fall is now here it's going to get cold in Toronto very quickly, and the homeless are at severe risk in increasingly colder temperatures. If you shop at Haven Toronto's Shop & Share site, anything you purchase will go directly to an elder homeless man in need, and there is something for every budget.

Of course you can also give to the general operating fund of the organization by clicking on the logo below. Please note that you will be linked to our very own donations page which still bears the former name of the shelter - The Good Neighbours Club. Your donation will still arrive at Haven Toronto.

THE 4th READING SERIES: MR. MUGS - ROCKETS AWAY!

The fourth monthly reading series continues in Mr. Mugs - Rockets Away!  by Martha Kambeitz and Denise Burns.

Unlike previous readers, this volume was published as a hardcover book within the Level 3 series of the Mr. Mugs readers. It was originally released in 1968. The Mr. Mugs books have been out of print for many years but occasionally you can find them on eBay, Amazon Marketplace or various other antique book dealers.

Louis credits the Mr. Mugs books series with helping him to learn English at a very young age.
You can listen to all the previous book readings on the Reading Series Page.
Here is this month's chapter.

Chapter 2: The Rocket

Rockets
Away!

The Rocket

    "What'll we play today?"
asked Tom.

"Play rockets with Cathy and me,"
said Pat.

    "Let's make a rocket - a big rocket!"
said Tom.

"Make a rocket!" said Pat. "How?"

"I saw one my friends made,"
said Tom. "Come on, help me.
We can do it. Let's try.
When we have it ready,
we can put Mr. Mugs into it."

    The boys worked and worked.

    Mother saw the rocket.
She said, "That looks like a rocket to me,
but will it go up?
How will you make it work?"

"Oh, we're going to surprise you,"
said the boys. "We'll try the rocket now.
Go and get Mr. Mugs, Pat.
We want him now."

"No, no, NO!" said Pat. "Not my dog!
Mark, you go into it."
... to be continued next month!

Many people use affirmations to bring about change in their behaviors and circumstances. To deliberately use affirmations is creating a cause that sends vibrations that the universe must respond to. This is the law of cause and effect. If you want to make sure that your affirmations work for you, please follow the steps outlined in this handbook. My daily practice includes handwritten affirmations nightly, 10x in a personal journal."

HEALING BODY ART

Every month Vancouver artist Nicole Pilich shares one of her henna creations with Ferreira Fest. And if you find yourself in Vancouver visit her studio (once it is safe again to do so, due to social distancing) and treat yourself to some Healing Body Art made just for you.

This month Nicole writes:

"So once again I am not making visual art but my art is more of the healing type. I’ve started to take people on herb walks around our local park to teach them about the healing and edible plants which grow all around us. I was fortunate to be granted some funds to do this and now take 6 people each time and these individuals get the walk for free. All my students have been super interested in learning and very appreciate to have this opportunity, as I am.
Here are photos of my walks while I point out which plants are good for what."

"Here I am with St. John’s Wort, and also some Yarrow. St. Johns Wort is a natural antidepressant, and a strong pain killer for nerve pain. Topically it is used on shingles."

"A close up of St. John’s Wort. Yarrow is used in colds and flu, it works to bring on a sweat to reduce a fever, and as a diuretic gets you peeing, also helping to rid the illness."

"Hawthorn trees provide some valuable circulation tonic. The berries used regularly will regulate blood pressure and cholesterol."

"A close up of hawthorn and its berries. And if there is a famine you can eat the berries as they are rich in nutrients."

"Comfrey is a strong skin healing plant. A paste or poultice of the leaves can be applied to a clean wound and help to heal that wound quickly. I’ve used this in combination with Aloe Vera, Vitamin E and lavender oil to heal a third degree burn. It worked like true magic! The paste adhered to the skin like a scab and peeled away slowly a week later to reveal new skin and with no scar."

"Here is my last group with me. Because of COVID-19I can only take 5-6 people to ensure we can all maintain safe distancing.

I’m so excited to be able to share my knowledge right now especially! It really feels like we are at a critical time in the world and going back to nature is so necessary for our healing."

"It is interesting to note that yesterday we had the worst air quality in all the world and although while out in the open it was difficult to take a deep breath, when I brought everyone into the trees, we were rewarded with clean air. Respect for our green brothers and sisters who nurture us."
