CHARITIES NEWS

Ability Online

The 22nd Axion Golf Tournament took place on June 20 and was a huge success in raising funds for Ability Online.

An exciting announcement was made about our new website coming this fall. Check out MyAbility.ca for details.

Ability Gives is the equipment fundraising part of Ability Online. This month all raised funds will go to Lamitta.

Lamitta is a bright and smart girl; she is 8 years old. She was diagnosed with cerebral palsy spastic quadriplegic at 18 months of age.

Due to her situation she is not able to move freely or take care of her basic needs. Lamitta uses a manual wheelchair for mobility, which she can propel for short distances on her own.

Lamitta is dependent on others for the majority of her self-care needs, such as dressing and bathing, and requires full assistance for all transfers.

As Lamitta is getting bigger she now requires a stairlift to go to the second floor safely.

Lamitta’s disability is permanent and the stairlift will make it easy and safe for her to go up and down. This donation will last her a lifetime, but it is expensive and we need your help to raise the money to get this for her.

Thank you all for your help and support. Click here to help Lamitta!

You can also make a general donation to Ability Online. All funds are used to support a safe online environment for special needs children and young adults. Click on the logo below to make a contribution.

Project Limelight

Project Limelight's second annual fundraiser Off To The Races will take place next week on July 26th - be sure to attend if you're in the area!

Watch a video from last year's event here.

Click here or on the new poster to the right for all the details and where to buy tickets!

Of course you can always make a regular donation online - it's easy and hassle-free. Your contribution will help disadvantaged inner-city kids in Vancouver receive a high-quality performing arts education, consisting of training with professionals in the theatre and film industry, and culminating in a major public performance or a short film.

Participation in Project Limelight also provides the children with nutritious snacks and meals. Click on the logo below to help!

Haven Toronto

Haven Toronto is the area's only daytime shelter for elder homeless men, as well as a tireless advocate for the homeless and affordable housing.

Read their monthly online magazine which is always full to the brim with great information, inspiring stories and practical ways to help those that are less fortunate. This summer's magazine focuses on  the impact of the summer heat on the homeless and the dangers of ageism, which is one of the most common types of discrimination.

Being outside more means more exposure to harmful UV rays. It’s a health risk people who are homeless face daily.

Shop for sunscreen in our online store. You receive a tax receipt and we share your purchase with people who are homeless.

There is no easier way to make sure your contribution goes directly to someone in need - no middle man required!

Of course you can also give to the general operating fund of the organization by clicking on the logo below. Please note that you will be linked to our very own donations page which still bears the former name of the shelter - The Good Neighbours Club. Your donation will still arrive at Haven Toronto.

The Children's Aid Foundation of Canada

June 21 was National Indigenous People’s Day, a day to celebrate the heritage, diverse cultures and outstanding achievements of First Nations, Inuit and Métis across the country.

At The Children's Aid Foundation of Canada we recognize that Indigenous children and youth are over represented in the child welfare system and we aspire to continue to support even more of these young people through our existing programs in collaboration with our growing partner base. One such program is Back to the Land, which gives children the opportunity to attend a culturally specific camp so they can stay connected to their culture.

We would like to take this opportunity to highlight our existing Indigenous-led partners who are doing incredible work to both keep Indigenous young people in and from the child welfare system connected to their culture, and to strengthen the capacity of Indigenous families to care for children through culturally relevant, community-based programs. Located across Ontario, Manitoba, and British Columbia, the following organizations are Indigenous-led partners we’re working with to deliver programs and funding to Indigenous children, youth, and families:

You can always read about the latest stories and campaigns in the online newsletter The Buzz.

The third monthly reading series is Mr. Mugs - Peek In Please by Martha Kambeitz, Denise Burns and Josephine Proctor.

Louis credits the Mr. Mugs books series with helping him to learn English at a very young age. The Mr. Mugs books have been out of print for many years but occasionally you can find them on eBay, Amazon Marketplace or various other antique book dealers.

You can listen to the book readings on the Reading Series Page.

I know the strangest little elf.
He works for Santa Claus.
He sews the ears on teddy bears,
And makes their big soft paws.
He puts the trunk on elephants
And hangs a tail behind.
He really is the strangest elf
That ever you could find.

Though he miraculously survived, the true miracle would occur 15 years later, when Tyler faced his attacker in prison to find forgiveness. Today, Tyler is Chief of Emergency Services in Red Deer and a speaker on the topic of forgiveness, touching thousands of lives in communities across Canada. Pelke will chronicle Tyler’s incredible journey - from burn victim to fire chief, trauma survivor to adversity thriver, fury to forgiveness - and will examine the nature of forgiveness; what it means, how to do it, and where it can lead.

And finally, some fashion advice on proper meeting attire from the guys (from left to right - Heath, Thomas and Jon):

"3 out of 4 brothers recommend dressing alike at meetings to prevent why-so-seriousness."

Had a blast on this one. A lovely cast and crew.
Thank you fans! I have to admit I was pretty nervous for y'all to see my portrayal of Kane but I think I'll be able to sleep better now after seeing all your kind words. It was fun to step into your world for a brief moment.

Mika McKinnon

With so many natural disasters going on lately Mika has been called on by many TV programs to explain what's happening and how to properly prepare for a disaster if you live in a disaster-prone area - and how to be ready for one even if you don't.

Doom scenarios and how to (hopefully) survive them are Mika's specialty as a disaster researcher, so pay attention to her advice!

"Behind the scenes of talking flooding with Fox News weekend: I didn’t pack real shoes for my trip to California."

More Mika on TV, this time in front of a Vancouver scene...

Earthquake coverage: Mika on Global BC -
a cool look behind the scenes in the studio!

You can watch Mika on the July 7th CBC Vancouver News starting at 3:18. Click on the screen cap for the link!

Mika will be running August 14's Sci-Fact v Sci-Fiction on Disasters, at Nerd Nite Vancouver.

Important life knowledge for public celebrations: These are the Minerals That Give Fireworks Their Colors by Mika McKinnon

Adult male polar bears are impressive creatures for sure. So according to Mika it's essential to know how to convert your own data into Adult Male Polar Bear (AMPB) data:
  1. [Your height in cm]/300 standing polar bears tall, or [height in cm]/250 polar bears long.
  2. [Your weight in kg]/500 the weight of an adult male polar bear.
  3. Flip the factions to find out how many of you would be needed to build a bear.

Now you do the math and go WOW.

HEALING BODY ART

Every month Vancouver artist Nicole Pilich shares one of her henna creations with Ferreira Fest. Please visit her website for lots more photos and fascinating facts and information about this ancient artform. And if you find yourself in Vancouver - visit her studio and treat yourself to some Healing Body Art made just for you.

This month Nicole writes:

"This is a before and after application of Jagua to attach two separate tattoos the client had. She wanted to connect the Phoenix bird and the tree somehow and is looking at ideas for a permanent fix.

We talked about what to put there first for some time and then I started to sketch with an eye liner till we were satisfied with the effect - I put flames at the end of the tree lapping the tip of the bird. Next I applied the Jagua gel. It took 2.5 hours to do actually from her arrival to her leaving."
